Hello everyone,

I am currently considering purchasing an IKEA Platsa furniture system for my workspace. My main question is: How stable are Platsa units under heavy load, especially when several shelves are filled with relatively heavy items or when the furniture is used as a room divider that is occasionally leaned on or moved?

I have read that the components are made of particleboard and partly metal, but I am unclear how this performs in everyday use under heavy load. Are there any experiences regarding the maximum load capacity per shelf, how durable the connections remain with frequent use, and whether reinforcement is recommended if the system is heavily used?

I look forward to feedback from experienced users or experts who can assess the load-bearing capacity of Platsa furniture in similar situations.

This is a very reasonable question, especially since PLATSA, as a modular system, is flexible but not designed for unlimited load capacity. Here is a structured overview:

- Material and construction: The panels are mainly made of MDF and particleboard, with a melamine surface, which is sufficient for moderate loads. The load-bearing elements are connected with metal fittings, providing a certain level of stability.

- Load capacity per shelf: IKEA states a maximum load of around 15 kg (33 lbs) per shelf in the assembly instructions. This is realistic when the load is evenly distributed.

- Load when used as a room divider: It is important that the furniture is securely fixed to the wall, as this greatly improves stability against lateral forces. Without fastening, it is more prone to tipping.

- Frequent movement and load: The click or plug-in systems are solid, but with frequent repositioning or heavy use, the connectors may loosen over time. Regular inspection and tightening are advisable.

In summary, PLATSA is well suited for moderate to medium loads. For very heavy loads or frequent use as a load-bearing piece, I recommend adding extra reinforcements or choosing complementary types of furniture.

I loaded a PLATSA shelf with books (about 12-15 kg per shelf, approximately 26-33 lbs) and it has held up without any issues for over a year. Important: Use the wall mounting. Without it, the unit becomes unstable.

I can confirm that. At first, I was unsure about the stability, especially since I use the furniture as a room divider. After a few months, some connections became a bit loose, but I tightened the screws and now everything is stable.

What helped me was avoiding overloading, so I distributed items rather loosely instead of placing too much weight on one shelf. I also made sure not to put very heavy objects on the upper shelves, which further relieves the structure.

If I learned one thing: this type of furniture is designed for normal everyday use, not for industrial loads or constant moving. But with some care, it works well and you can rely on its stability.
