ᐅ How soundproof are windows?

Hello everyone,
since moving into our house, we have had a lot of issues with the windows. They are aluminum windows with triple glazing. I keep noticing how sound-transmitting they are. For example, this morning I woke up and heard the birds singing. That’s not really a problem, but it surprises me considering the window was closed and there is no tree nearby. Also, when I stand at the window on the first floor (second floor in US terms) with it closed, I can hear the neighbors talking in the garden next door (it’s a terraced house, so not very far away). They are not shouting. Is this normal, or am I just expecting too much?

@11ant: I would also be interested in information on this topic.

My issue is similar to the original poster’s. I suspect that the connection of the windows to the inner masonry wall in my case is faulty. The windows are only about 2 cm (1 inch) embedded in the inner masonry, while the rest of the depth is in the insulation layer. Around the window, the window installer then glued insulation boards (e.g., polystyrene) and sealed the gap to the window with foam.

In the insulation layer above the window, there is also a roller shutter installed between the lintel and the brickwork (which I don’t see providing any additional sound insulation).

Can anyone provide further help? Thanks.

You probably mean the inner leaf of a cavity wall.

I wouldn’t call that a suspicion: anyone who seals with foam could just as well bark at the moon. I believe this issue is even discussed more often in the green forum (building experts forum) than here, but I haven’t saved any references from either.

Many window suppliers nowadays “expect” the installer’s purpose to be simply to fasten the supplied windows somehow into the building to trigger the customer’s payment. If the installer did this bare-handed, the effect would be about the same as with whipped cream around the window frames: the audience cheers, but it doesn’t really help … ?

I can’t provide details on the connections here; I have never dealt with cases like this and therefore not handled any related claims.

@11ant: Thanks.
What would a professional waterproofing (without foam) look like?

The authoritative guidelines for proper window installation are provided by RAL and ift. I have nothing against foam itself—only against the misconception that foam is a miracle solution for any kind of excessive disregard for precision.
