Hello,

I need to decide soon on a type of flooring to be installed in our house. We have underfloor heating throughout. We have been offered sealed parquet flooring (light oak in a ship plank pattern) with a wear layer of about 4 mm (0.16 inches). Sealed means it is neither oiled nor lacquered, but treated with a special finish. I don’t have the exact details yet.

I understand the advantages of parquet and I really like how it feels to walk on. What I’m a bit unsure about is how resistant the parquet would be with toddlers around. For example, if something spills onto their pants, I imagine the wood might absorb it quite quickly. Sanding out stains might not always work, and stains in the middle of a room would be very unpleasant. Does anyone have experience with this?

We have had oak parquet flooring in all the living areas for 1.5 years now (three children aged three, seven, and seven, plus a Bernese Mountain Dog). This means a lot of toys on the floor, ride-on cars, doll prams, and so on.

The floors do get a lot of wear, but oak can withstand quite a bit. Minor scratches or dents (like when a plate accidentally drops to the floor) are unavoidable. However, that’s actually part of the charm of parquet flooring – it “lives.” Despite our large family, I would still describe the floor as looking excellent. Sanding and refinishing are still a long way off.

What can really damage parquet, however, is liquid that isn’t wiped up for an extended period (although even puppy urine hasn’t caused damage after an hour) and, for example, sandy shoes (which act like sandpaper).

Hello, I can only confirm this. Water / moisture is deadly. We once cleaned our carpet with a wet vacuum cleaner and wondered for hours why it smelled bad. The stains were a bit darker, but it absorbed everything.

However, I would advise you not to choose flooring that is too soft. Just take a hammer and drop it from a few centimeters (a few inches) above the floor. If there are already dents, it is too soft. That was the case in our old apartment. Every small compact item left a nasty dent.

Now we have bamboo flooring. Really durable! We already had it in our dance studio back then.
