JORISHello everyone,
I am planning to assemble a complete IKEA Metod kitchen myself soon and would like to estimate how much time I should roughly allow for this. I am particularly interested in the average duration from assembling the individual cabinets to the full installation, including cabinet carcasses, interior fittings, doors, and of course the countertop.
I have a decent toolbox, basic DIY skills, and will be partially supported by a second person. Still, I want to be realistic since I cannot work on it continuously all day.
Therefore, my question to everyone is: How quickly were you able to assemble your entire IKEA Metod kitchen by yourself? Are there any experiences regarding time-consuming parts or common pitfalls that one should definitely know about in advance? Any tips on a sensible order for the assembly would also be great.
Thanks in advance for your input!

I am planning to assemble a complete IKEA Metod kitchen myself soon and want to estimate how much time I should roughly allocate for it.This is really an important question because it’s easy to underestimate how much work such a kitchen involves. I personally took about a week, working roughly 6 hours each day—so around 40 hours in total.
What stood out to me with the Metod system is that the individual cabinets are well designed, but the countertop is often the tricky part—especially when you have to cut it to size and secure it properly. Lack of experience with a cordless drill or leveling the cabinets can easily cause delays.

I didn’t do this properly at first and had to make many adjustments, which really consumes time and patience. Also, it’s important to thoroughly read the assembly instructions instead of just starting to build.I find that working with a partner is much more relaxed and faster, so it’s great that you have help. Don’t be too hard on yourself if it takes longer than expected—that’s normal for projects like this. In the end, having your own kitchen is definitely very rewarding.

How quickly were you able to assemble your entire IKEA Metod kitchen yourself? For me, the entire installation was completed in two days, about 16 hours in total. Important points are:
- Assemble the cabinets in the correct order
- Install the countertop last
- Don’t tighten screws too much at the beginning
Having a helper can save a lot of time.

- Plan the countertop and baseboards thoroughly in advance
- Use a spirit level and, if needed, shims to compensate for uneven surfaces
- Adjusting small details like door hinges takes time but should be done after installation
Additionally, sorting all parts before assembly helps a lot. This saves time later and reduces frustration.
If you’re installing the kitchen with electrical appliances, factor in extra time, which is often underestimated.
Good luck!

Are there any experiences with time-consuming steps or common mistakes that one should definitely be aware of beforehand?Hi JORIS,
I believe there are three things that can make assembling a Metod kitchen really challenging:
- Screws and wall plugs: People often underestimate how many small parts come together. Sometimes it’s frustrating, but in the end, it feels like a small victory when everything fits.
- Worktop: Cutting and fitting it precisely always takes more time than expected. I recommend allowing an extra half day for this.
- Doors and drawers: Adjusting them is a bit of an art. One or two attempts are normal.
With enough music and a nice coffee break, the whole process goes faster and can even be fun 😉.
I completed my first kitchen in 3 days without stress. Good preparation is key – sorting screws, reading the instructions, clearing space, and then starting step by step.
