Hello everyone,

I have a question that has been on my mind for some time: How often should IKEA Brimnes furniture be checked and adjusted if necessary? I understand that furniture requires a certain level of maintenance in everyday use, especially cabinets like those from the BRIMNES range, which are made of particleboard and fittings. I’m particularly interested in how often screws, hinges, and other mechanical components should be inspected to ensure stability and functionality. Are there any practical experiences or recommendations regarding the interval for long-term use? And what should one pay special attention to in order to prevent the furniture from wobbling or the doors from sticking or closing poorly? Thanks in advance for your insights!

I can understand why this concerns you. I check my BRIMNES cabinets about every 6 months. The screws on the hinges tend to loosen over time, and if you catch it early, you can avoid bigger issues. For me, it feels good to include this in regular maintenance, perhaps during spring and autumn cleaning. That way, you won’t be stressed if a door starts not closing properly.

It’s also important not to overload the furniture to avoid putting too much strain on the fittings. Have you noticed any problems yet, or why do you want to address this so specifically?

Checking them twice a year is good, but I recommend the following approach for optimal results:

- Consistency: Inspect screws, screw connections, and fittings every 3 to 6 months. In the first year after assembly, check every 3 months; later, every 6 months is sufficient.
- Adjustment: Hinges and drawer slides can often be fine-tuned using small adjustment screws. Be careful to avoid damaging the finish while doing this.
- Load considerations: BRIMNES furniture made of particleboard is sensitive to excessive weight. Regular inspections help prevent long-term damage.
- Follow assembly instructions: When making adjustments, please use the IKEA assembly manual as a reference.

I would like to know if you assembled the furniture yourself? Often, initial loosening appears shortly after use, which may also suggest adjusting how it’s handled.

That makes a lot of sense, especially since the components can still settle or shift slightly right after installation. With my first BRIMNES furniture, I definitely felt that adjustments were needed more often during the first year than later on. However, it was never a big effort.

Consider load: BRIMNES furniture made of chipboard is sensitive to excessive weight.

That’s something I underestimated. It’s easy to tend to fill cabinets fully, even though probably not everything belongs in there. Perhaps this should be considered in maintenance as well—not only mechanically checking but also always keeping an eye on the load.

I will remember the clear recommendation to check after 3 months. Thanks for the detailed assessment!
