Hello everyone, a few months ago I assembled an Ikea Pax wardrobe, and now I’m wondering: How often should the screws of a Pax system be tightened again to ensure both safety and stability?

I’ve read that wooden furniture can settle over time due to temperature changes and load, which can cause screws to loosen. Since the Pax wardrobe is quite large and often loaded, I want to make sure I handle this properly.

Is there a clear recommendation on how often the screws should be re-tightened? Is it only important during the first year, or should it be done regularly, for example once a year?

Looking forward to your opinions and best practice tips!

This is a very relevant question that many people underestimate. Basically, retightening screws depends on the material, the load, and the environment. Pax wardrobes are made from panel materials with fasteners that can change under stress and temperature fluctuations.

- During the first month after assembly, I would recommend checking the screws every 2 weeks and retightening them if necessary. Especially in the first few weeks, the material still settles, which can cause connections to become loose.

- Afterward, inspections every 3 to 6 months are advisable, especially for heavily used units or wardrobes located in rooms with high humidity or temperature variations.

- After the first year, usually checking and tightening the screws once a year is sufficient.

The most critical connections are those with cam locks and wood screws, as overtightening can cause the material to crack, while loose screws can lead to instability.

I’m curious: Do you live in an area with large temperature fluctuations or high humidity? What will the wardrobe be loaded with? These factors greatly affect the maintenance interval.

This recommendation makes technical sense, but it is often too time-consuming for the average user. From a technical standpoint, Ikea does not specify explicit retightening intervals, which suggests the construction remains stable without frequent retightening.

Practically, the following intervals are reasonable:

- Once after 1 month (to account for initial settling)
- Once after 6 months
- Then once annually

For normal residential conditions without extreme stress, this should be sufficient. In humid rooms or under heavy loads (e.g., very heavy doors or fully loaded clothes rods), a semi-annual check is advisable.

It is important not to overtighten when retightening, as this can damage the threads. While a torque wrench is uncommon for Ikea furniture, careful handling is recommended.

In my experience, it is sufficient to check the screws every 6 to 12 months and tighten them if necessary.

It is also important not to overload the cabinet, as this protects the screws and joints.

If you notice that doors or drawers are not closing properly, this is also a sign to check the screws.

Here is a brief overview of the best way to properly retighten the Pax screws:

1. Immediately after assembly:
- Check the screws every 2 weeks (the material is still settling)

2. During the first 6 months:
- Check every 3 months

3. Long term:
- Retighten at least once a year

Tips:
- Use a screwdriver with the correct bit to avoid damaging the screws
- Pay special attention to the connections at the cabinet doors and base structure
- If you hang heavy or many garments, check more often

Common mistake I often see: overtightening screws and damaging the panel material – it’s better to work carefully and controlled.

The most important thing: consistency and attention. If you follow this, you’ll enjoy your cabinet for a long time.
