ᐅ How often do you use your roller shutters?

Hello everyone,

I’m curious how often you use your roller shutters and how much added value they provide for you.
At the moment, we hardly ever use ours, and after renovating our house, I can’t see why that would change (especially since the energy-saving aspect will almost disappear).
So, I’m considering leaving out the roller shutters (one less thermal bridge) and instead installing decorative, non-functional shutters.

Best regards

My better half constantly opens and closes them, sometimes at specific times.

I only need them in the bedroom for sleeping... I used to have them too and didn’t need them for anything other than sleeping.

But I can understand people who really like them... I just prefer things more "open and airy" and accept that they stay open for that reason.

Every day. On the ground floor to avoid unwanted views from the street or to block out the sun. And of course fully closed in the evening. On the upper floor, always when sleeping (I also need the room to be completely dark) or when the sun is shining too strongly upstairs. In my opinion, a house without roller shutters just doesn’t work.

My parents-in-law have neighbors like that—we call them "the vampires."
As soon as a ray of sunshine breaks through the clouds, the roller shutters go down...

Of course, that’s one way to do it... but do you really want to sit in the living room in dim light all summer?

Usually, a house has at least two sides that don’t receive direct sunlight. The windows on those sides still let in plenty of natural light even if you shade the sun-facing windows. Additionally, there are gaps between the individual elements. On top of that, I can leave 20% of my blinds open because, in midsummer, the sun is high enough that only a thin strip of light reaches inside.

What I mean is—shaded interiors in summer are far from dim light, at least in my experience.

I also prefer sitting in the "dark" rather than in the heat. If I want sunlight, I go outside. I don’t need it inside the house; it’s my cool retreat. Fortunately, we don’t have any windows facing south. The last few summers have shown the direction things are headed, and summers like these are simply unbearable without sun protection. Generally, I find heat very hard to tolerate. That’s why I shade the sun-exposed windows and let the light come in through the shaded windows.

Exactly. When you lower the roller shutters (even just halfway), a little sunlight comes through the gaps and the rest gets blocked. But not more than that. And that's more than enough for me during the height of summer. Especially as it’s getting warmer and we are facing record-breaking summers ahead. That’s why I’m glad to have my roller shutters. In new buildings, the heat can build up significantly if you don’t darken the rooms. Good insulation has its pros and cons.

In the new development next door, I regretfully noticed that some homeowners decided not to install venetian blinds.

I have no idea why these are so hyped, but all the houses around us with those things are making an annoying rattling noise.
