Hello everyone,

I recently assembled an IKEA Brimnes furniture piece (for example, a bed frame and some cabinets) and now I’m wondering: How often do the screws on IKEA Brimnes products need to be tightened again to ensure stable and safe use?

I understand that with some furniture, screw connections can loosen over time due to stress, but are there any specific experiences or recommendations on how frequently the screws should be checked or tightened?

I’m also interested in whether the maintenance effort for Brimnes differs from other IKEA models, and if using the right technique could possibly reduce the need for retightening.

Looking forward to your insights and advice, ideally based on experience or technical recommendations.

This question is not easy to answer definitively, as it depends on several factors: frequency of use, load, and quality of assembly. The Brimnes construction is solid, but IKEA furniture is known for being designed as flat-pack assemblies, whose screw connections can loosen over time with use.

There are no specific manufacturer recommendations for a fixed retightening interval, which I find somewhat surprising. I would rely on practical experience in your case.

- If the furniture is moved or heavily used regularly, it is advisable to check and tighten screws at least every 3 to 6 months.
- In normal use, checking and tightening once a year is usually sufficient.

It would be interesting to discuss whether retightening actually improves stability significantly, or if Brimnes furniture is more likely to experience material fatigue or wood deformation that cannot be fixed by simply tightening screws.

Therefore, any evidence or studies on this topic would be welcome; otherwise, we are left with experiential knowledge.

I have checked and tightened the screws on the Brimnes approximately every six months.

This is usually enough to keep the furniture stable. If you place a lot of weight on the furniture, check more frequently.

To add from my experience:

IKEA Brimnes furniture is made from particleboard, which can develop pressure marks under load, causing screws to become a bit loose. Regularly tightening the screws helps ensure the joints last longer and prevents wobbling parts.

I recommend:
- First tightening after about 2-3 months of use to compensate for settling.
- Then check the screws every 6-12 months.
- Avoid over-tightening, as the material can be easily damaged.

Besides tightening, it helps to ensure clean threads and correct screw seating during assembly. If you already have tools like a torque wrench, you can better control the tightening process and avoid damage.

This way, you should achieve a good balance between safety and protecting the material.
