Hello everyone,

I have a specific question regarding the IKEA Brimnes chest of drawers: What is the maximum weight each drawer can hold without sustaining permanent damage or breaking?

I understand that IKEA usually provides general guidelines, but I often find them to be somewhat vague or imprecise. I plan to use the drawers for somewhat heavier storage, such as thicker clothing, books, or technical equipment.

My specific questions are:
- Is there an official maximum load rating from IKEA for the Brimnes drawers?
- Have forum members here had personal experience with heavily loaded drawers?
- How does the material (particleboard, fittings, drawer slides) perform with regard to load limits?
- What recommendations are there for increasing load capacity (e.g., with additional reinforcements)?

I look forward to your detailed answers and any practical tips or concrete values you can share.

Hello Pinpau,

regarding your question: IKEA provides load limits for many of their products, but these are usually guidelines and refer to safe everyday use. As far as I know, the drawers of the BRIMNES dresser are designed to carry about 10 to 15 kg (22 to 33 lbs) without damaging the material.

This is mainly because the drawers are made of coated particleboard, and the drawer slides are sized for moderate weights. Overloading can cause the slides to wear out or the fasteners to become loose.

For heavy loads, such as books, I would recommend furniture with more robust drawers. If you still want to use the BRIMNES for that purpose, be sure to distribute the weight evenly and avoid putting too much weight in one spot.

Additional reinforcements are possible in principle, but IKEA furniture is not designed to be structurally altered significantly.

I can fully understand the uncertainty. I had a similar question a few months ago because I wanted to use the BRIMNES drawers for my technical equipment. To be honest, I was initially skeptical, but I still loaded about 12 kg (26 lbs) per drawer.

That’s correct; the runners clearly define the weight limit. In my experience, the drawers hold the weight as long as it is distributed evenly and you don’t pull them out fully or slam them too often.

My advice would be, if possible, to stack heavier items lower down or store them in more robust furniture. Still, it’s great that someone is asking—sometimes you feel alone with these kinds of questions.

There is no official detailed load capacity information for the individual drawers of the IKEA BRIMNES from IKEA.

- Generally, the drawers are equipped with metal runners that provide stable support for loads up to about 12 kg (26 lbs).
- The particleboard construction and the fasteners also limit the maximum load capacity.
- Long-term loading of more than 15 kg (33 lbs) per drawer is generally discouraged by product development.

If you want to increase the load capacity, the following can be considered:
- Additional internal reinforcement inside the drawer
- Strengthening the side panels, for example with thin solid wood strips
- Avoiding concentrated overloading

However, these modifications are custom adaptations and may affect warranty claims.

Hey Pinpau, I think it’s great that you’re asking for details! 😊 I’ve been using my BRIMNES dresser for years, and some of the drawers are really packed with thick winter jackets and even a few heavy binders.

In my experience, the drawers can easily handle that if the weight is distributed evenly. Of course, 20 kg (44 lbs) might be pushing it, but around 12-15 kg (26-33 lbs) is no problem at all! 😎

What really helps is cleaning and lubricating the drawer slides regularly. This makes the drawers glide more smoothly and reduces the stress on the mechanism.

So I can only encourage you to experiment a bit, but watch out for any wobbling or squeaking – if that happens, it’s better to remove some weight before any damage occurs!

Brief and clear:
The BRIMNES drawers are officially rated for a maximum load of about 10-15 kg (22-33 lbs).
Exceeding this increases the risk of damage.
For heavier loads, a more robust solution should be chosen.
