Hi,
I am trying to estimate how much time it will take to paint 650m² (7000 sq ft) of wall. There are two of us, both complete beginners and poorly equipped. Does anyone have experience with this? I need to request time off...

No edit: it should of course say reject.

The informal excuse does not exempt you from the obligation to report helper hours. Things get really complicated if you have helpers on the construction who you haven’t registered, or if you report too few hours (from their point of view).
We had two visits from the BG Bau… with a prefabricated house… just imagine that.
Each time, of course, they only found me and my wife at home because we did almost everything ourselves. Only for wallpapering did my parents help.

By the way, BG Bau also has a minimum contribution: 100 € (about 110 USD). We reported all the hours and in the end paid 104 € (about 114 USD). As I said, help was only for wallpapering and partly for laying floors.

BG Bau is like the TV license fee system… you build, so you pay. Even if the claim is not justified, you have to pay first and can only challenge it afterwards in court. It’s like a fine notice.
They rarely really pay out if the helpers are family members, but it doesn’t help. In Italy, you pay protection money to the Mafia; here, it’s to BG Bau.

Just to make sure I understand correctly. If I don’t have any helpers working on my construction at all, I still have to pay a contribution of 100 € (approximately 110 USD) to BG Bau? Even though I don’t receive any service, have no contract, and don’t report any hours? I basically have nothing to do with the organization since they don’t provide anything for me, and yet I still have to pay? That’s worse than the mafia, because at least with them I would get protection from other criminals.

That’s exactly how I understood the polite letters from BG Bau. In the first letter, they kindly threaten you twice on the first page with fines. Once 2,500 euros if you don’t respond, and up to 10,000 euros fine for false information, if I remember correctly.

I don’t know how it works with buildings that are actually accepted as turnkey.

So I checked: There is a minimum contribution of 100€ (approximately $110), but if you don’t have to pay anything, then of course you don’t have to pay this either. However, if you had to pay, for example, 10€ (approximately $11), it would immediately become 100€ (approximately $110).

I just called to ask whether my relatives are insured or not. There is no clear statement on this. It’s very vague and you probably have to take legal action to clarify.
For example: if my father helps continuously for 14 days (i.e. 80 hours), the likelihood is high that he is insured. In that case, it is (probably) not considered a favor. But if we finish in one week, it looks different. Then it is more like a favor and uninsured. I estimate that even if my father actually breaks his arm, and helps for 3 months, he still wouldn’t be insured.
