SEDAFOHello everyone,
I slightly damaged the drawers on my IKEA Malm bed, which run on side-mounted rollers. Some rollers are broken, and others no longer run smoothly. Now I’m considering whether to repair it myself or hire a professional, especially since the drawers are quite heavy and the mechanism seems somewhat complex.
So, my question to the community is: What does it typically cost to have Malm drawers repaired by a professional when rollers or runners need to be replaced or adjusted?
I’m particularly interested in the general price range and whether flat rates are common or if the cost mainly depends on labor and materials. Just to clarify: This involves 2 drawers, each with 3 rollers and runners.
Thanks for your feedback!

How much does it cost to have Malm drawers professionally repaired when rollers or drawer slides need to be replaced or readjusted? I'm especially interested in the general price range. The cost of a professional repair mainly depends on the labor involved and the replacement parts. Rollers and drawer slides for IKEA furniture are generally inexpensive to obtain (around 5-15 euros per roller/slide).
Depending on the region and hourly rate, repair costs charged by a craftsman or carpenter are typically between 50 and 120 euros. A fixed flat rate is rare, as the work usually takes 1-2 hours plus material costs.
I recommend getting a cost estimate in advance and checking whether the replacement parts can be ordered separately and installed by yourself to save money.

The cost of a professional repair mainly depends on the amount of labor and the replacement parts.Exactly, and to add to that: For IKEA furniture like Malm, the rollers and drawer slides are often standardized and relatively easy to replace. However, if someone isn’t very technically skilled, the repair can still be tricky because the alignment needs to be precise for the drawers to slide smoothly.
A professional, such as a furniture maker or repair service, will charge not only for the materials but also for the time spent adjusting the fit.
If you have some DIY experience, I recommend ordering replacement rollers from IKEA or third-party suppliers and installing them yourself. There are many instructions available online.

Normally, you can expect to pay around 80 to 150 eurosThat sounds reasonable, but I would question the amount. Does the professional really only replace the rollers and tracks? Or are any damaged wooden parts also repaired, which could increase the cost?
It should also be clarified whether travel expenses are included in the price and whether the professional works at your home or takes the drawers away. This can significantly affect the costs.
Replacement parts from IKEA usually aren’t expensive; most of the cost comes from labor. So a transparent breakdown would be important, otherwise you might end up paying too much.

I would question the total cost. Does the professional really only handle the replacement? Or is more work required? That's a valid point. The drawer side panels are slightly damaged on my unit, but no major cracks. I suspect most of the cost comes from adjusting and fitting the new rollers.
One more question for the pros here: Should you expect to pay sales tax (VAT) when ordering a repair as a private individual? And what about the warranty on the repair work?
