Hello

How much insulation is needed for the basement level to properly insulate it? My house provider uses 10cm (4 inches) of insulation on the basement walls and the slab. Does increasing the insulation thickness make any difference?

What kind of basement insulation do you have?

Thanks

Best regards, BlueSky

Hello BlueSky29,
for basement insulation (perimeter insulation) using XPS, insulation thicknesses between twelve and 30 centimeters (5 and 12 inches) are sufficient to meet the requirements of the Energy Saving Ordinance (EnEV) as well as the Passive House standard. The exact design always depends on the local soil conditions. In addition to their good thermal insulation properties, XPS insulation boards are also resistant to moisture due to their closed-cell structure and have particularly high compressive strength. Therefore, they can be used in areas with groundwater pressure and maintain their full functionality for many decades.

It always depends on the intended use, and whether the space is heated or unheated! Think of the energy performance regulations (compliance requirements). 😉
