Hello everyone,
I have a question about storage in a 4x4 KALLAX unit from IKEA. I’m planning to store my trading cards or small insert boxes in it, and I’m specifically wondering: How many individual inserts can fit at most in a 4x4 KALLAX shelf?
I’m referring to the small inserts that you can buy separately to divide the large compartments into smaller sections—often made of plastic or wood, about 15cm x 15cm (6 inches x 6 inches) per insert. There are theoretically different sizes, but I’m particularly interested in the maximum possible number if you fill the compartments completely to the edge, minimizing wasted space.
Maybe someone here is familiar with the dimensions and possible subdivisions? I look forward to your input!

Just as a supplement: The official IKEA inserts for KALLAX often measure about 33x33 cm (13x13 inches) per compartment and are rarely divided into smaller boxes. For DIY solutions, the size of the inserts depends on how they are cut; otherwise, with 15x15 cm (6x6 inches) per insert, you can fit up to 4 inserts per compartment at most.

Inserts measuring 15x15 cm (6x6 inches) fit two side by side plus a small gap.Exactly, and this gap is usually the issue, so you can’t quite fit four inserts per compartment. You can make adjustments, but 64 is the maximum unless the inserts are slightly smaller.

Each of the 16 large compartments can be perfectly equipped with inserts.Exactly, I also have 4x4 KALLAX and can confirm that it works well. Better to measure precisely, but 64 inserts are correct for 15cm (6 inches) x 15cm (6 inches) inserts.
Thank you for the many quick and helpful responses!
Just to clarify briefly: I am referring to the typical boxes that are about 15x15x15 cm (6x6x6 inches) in size, so cubes. The height fits exactly to the compartment, so I don’t want to stack them.
Is it correct that you can fit 4 of these inserts per compartment, so a total of 64 in a 4x4 KALLAX?
What about other inserts? Are there shallower inserts available that would allow stacking more on one level?

So is it correct that you can fit 4 of these inserts per compartment, totaling 64 in a 4x4 KALLAX?Exactly, 4 inserts per compartment is realistic.

Are there also shallower inserts so that you could stack more on one level?Yes, there are shallower boxes (e.g. 15x15x7 cm (6x6x3 inches)) that allow stacking two layers in one compartment, increasing the capacity. Depending on stackability, you could theoretically fit up to 128 inserts in a 4x4 KALLAX, provided the boxes are stackable and sturdy enough.

so theoretically fit up to 128 inserts in the 4x4 KALLAXExactly! That’s amazing! I love IKEA and smart storage solutions. 🙂
If you manage to set up your inserts like that, definitely share how it worked out. That will motivate all of us here!
