ᐅ How many appointments with a building inspector or structural engineer are recommended?

Bob79We are building a single-family house with a general contractor who has many years of experience and a generally good reputation. We have now decided to hire an independent expert for construction supervision. The question is how many appointments are reasonable. The offers range from 6 to 10 appointments. Those proposing 10 appointments advise against having only 6. But is that really too few? Who has experience?
Focusing only on the expert’s fees in this initial question would certainly be too narrow!
The crucial point is how much certainty the client wants.
With just one site inspection (hypothetically assumed here), the likelihood of achieving the desired level of safety is close to zero.
In other words, the visit could just as well be skipped.
From a purely technical perspective (which must be the priority), the key question is: how many critical construction phases require occasional site supervision?
This question is also justified for another reason: in Germany, most construction projects are completed without supervision from the client—and it still works!
Only the expert, with their experience and professional expertise, can determine which parts of the process might be critical and therefore require monitoring.
If this question is answered solely based on the budget, uncertainty will inevitably arise in other areas—uncertainty that competent inspection visits are intended to prevent!
Best regards, KlaRa

One expert alone is not sufficient, as no single person can acquire such extensive specialized knowledge!
Furthermore, acting in this way is unfair competition...
For specialized trades like heating, roofing, metalwork, etc., I recommend commissioning only experts with solid professional knowledge!
I recommend certified experts according to ISO/IEC 17024! They must demonstrate above-average expertise in their respective trade!
