Hello everyone,
I am planning to buy the Ikea Brimnes dresser and am especially interested in the noise level of the drawers during regular use. Specifically, I would like to know how loud the drawers are when opening and closing, particularly when they are used normally—not handled very gently, but used quickly and frequently in everyday life. Are there noticeable noises that could be disturbing in a quiet home?
I have read that some furniture pieces come with soft-close runners, but is that the case with the Brimnes series? Otherwise, any experiences regarding material contact, friction noises, or the overall smoothness of operation would be helpful. Thanks in advance!

Hi Fraju,
I’ve been using the Brimnes chest of drawers for almost a year now. The drawers aren’t completely silent, but they’re not noisy either. You do hear a fairly noticeable "smack" sound when opening and closing, especially if you close the drawer quickly. The furniture slides don’t have any sound-dampening features—so no soft-close function, which would have made a big difference.
With a bit of practice, you can control the noise quite well, and in everyday use it doesn’t bother me at home. It’s more of a typical sound you hardly notice after a few days. If you’re looking for absolutely silent drawers when buying furniture, you might want to consider alternatives 😅.
But hey, for the price, it’s definitely something you can easily live with.

Hello Fraju,
to answer your question about the drawers of the Ikea Brimnes dresser in more detail: The noise is caused by the simple roller or sliding rail mechanism without any damping. This means the drawers glide on metal or plastic runners, which typically produces a clicking or scraping sound when closing firmly.
The front panels themselves are made of coated particle board or MDF, which is relatively sturdy but does not provide any sound insulation. Especially when opening or closing the drawers quickly, the noise is quite noticeable.
If you live in a larger apartment or have an active household, you probably won’t find this bothersome. In very quiet environments, perhaps at night or in small apartments, however, it might be more noticeable.
One professional solution could be adding damping pads afterward to soften the impact a little. This is, of course, not Ikea standard, but it is an option for the Brimnes series. The quality of the sliding mechanism definitely matches its price range – solid, but not high-end level.

Interesting question and interesting contributions so far. However, I think it is important to distinguish between the subjective perception of "loud" and actual measurements.
I doubt that anyone has measured the sound pressure levels of the Brimnes drawers in operation, for example in decibels. Without such data, the discussion remains imprecise. What one person considers "loud" might be perceived as normal by someone else.
Furthermore, I have concerns that IKEA furniture generally shows a wide variation in manufacturing quality, so the noise level can strongly depend on the individual piece. It would be interesting if someone has tested several Brimnes dressers and could confirm whether there are differences.
In principle, I often criticize that inexpensive furniture like Brimnes tends to put surprisingly little emphasis on comfort features, such as soft-closing drawers. This is probably the price for low costs. But whether this actually causes significant disturbance in everyday use needs to be demonstrated, in my view.

You can definitely hear a distinct "smacking" sound when pulling in and outThank you for your assessment; the "smacking" sound is now clearer to me and gives a good impression.

It would also be interesting to know whether the dresser’s material tends to amplify the noise level. I imagine that particleboard or MDF reflects sound differently compared to solid wood.
Thanks to everyone—any insight helps me move forward!
