Hello everyone,

I am currently looking into the question of how long the paint on Billy shelves actually lasts under everyday conditions. I am particularly interested in how durable the surface of the shelves is during daily use, for example against scratches, wear from books and decorative items, or occasional cleaning with damp wipes. Are there any experiences regarding whether the paint wears off more quickly on the edges, or can one expect at least several years of normal use? A realistic assessment is important to me, preferably with some advice on which factors might affect durability. Thanks in advance!

I have had my Billy shelf in the living room for almost 3 years now. The color has shown hardly any signs of wear so far, not even on the edges. It is important that the surface does not get wet frequently.

This concerns me as well, because I move things around quite a lot and often notice light scratches on the surface. It can be frustrating at times, especially considering how long you actually want to use the furniture. Sometimes I wonder if a bit more care can really make a difference or if it’s normal for the finish to wear off. I try to handle my shelves gently, but I guess it’s impossible to avoid completely.

It’s impressive how durable the shelves seem to be for many of you here! 🙂 I’ve had my Billy shelf for about 5 years now, and there aren’t any major marks on the finish. Of course, if you look closely, you might see slight signs of wear on the corners, but that’s hardly noticeable. The important thing is to avoid using harsh cleaners on the surface, as they can quickly damage the protective coating! So, folks, no worries—unless you’re hitting it with a hammer, the finish really holds up well! :-)

Absolutely! I consider the Billy shelves timeless classics among furniture – sturdy, reliable, and with a bit of care, you hardly need to worry about the finish. I also have a few minor scratches, but they just tell stories of past times and cozy evenings in the living room 😉 The important thing is not to work with sharp objects on the surface without protection.

My experience: The paint holds up well with normal use of the shelf. Wear is visible on the edges after 4 years, but it is not significant. Cleaning only with damp cloths preserves the paint.
