ᐅ How long does it take to fully assemble an IKEA PLATSA wardrobe?

mertpuHello everyone, I’m about to buy an IKEA Platsa wardrobe and I’m wondering how long the entire assembly process usually takes on average, including all steps. I understand that it depends on the size of the combination, but I’m mainly interested in experience from people who have already assembled the wardrobe: How much time do you realistically plan for unpacking, sorting the parts, assembly, adjusting the doors, and any troubleshooting? Are there certain phases during assembly that tend to take significantly more time? I want to set a realistic time frame and would appreciate detailed information, including advice on whether it’s best to assemble the wardrobe with two people or if it’s manageable alone. Thanks in advance!
I recently assembled my PLATSA wardrobe (2 units, about 180 cm (70 inches) wide) by myself. In total, it took me around 3 hours. It’s important to sort all screws and parts before starting, as this will save time later. Adjusting the doors takes an additional 20-30 minutes. If you have a partner helping, the process goes much faster.
The assembly time for an IKEA PLATSA wardrobe can vary significantly depending on the size and complexity of the chosen modules. Generally, the process can be outlined as follows:
- Unpacking and sorting the individual parts: Depending on the scope, this takes between 30 to 60 minutes.
- Preparation, such as laying out tools and reading the instructions: about 10 to 15 minutes.
- The actual assembly, including building the frame, installing inserts and back panels, takes the most time. For a standard module measuring approximately 60x60x230 cm (24x24x91 inches), I would estimate 1.5 to 2 hours.
- Installing and adjusting the doors requires careful attention and can take 30 to 45 minutes, depending on experience.
- If mistakes are made or parts don’t fit immediately, an additional 15 to 30 minutes should be factored in as buffer time.
The assembly location is also important: in tight spaces, everything takes longer. And yes, assembling with two people makes the process noticeably easier and faster, especially if one can hold parts while the other fastens them.
I’m curious which modules you have planned—do you already have a specific configuration in mind?

I would be interested to know which exact modules are planned. Do you already have a specific configuration in mind? This question is key because without concrete information about the configuration, the duration can only be estimated very roughly. Previous experience and familiarity with instructions and tools can also make a significant difference.
In general, I have found that IKEA sometimes deliberately creates very detailed assembly instructions to minimize mistakes – this often results in longer assembly times. However, the effort is not proportional to the size, since certain steps are repeated.
I also wonder whether Mertpu intends to build the cabinet primarily for storage or with many customizations (e.g., interior dividers, lighting), as this could require additional time.

My current setup includes three modules in total: two cabinets measuring 60 x 60 cm (24 x 24 inches) and one taller module measuring 60 x 40 cm (24 x 16 inches), all with hinged doors and some internal fittings. It’s less about lighting or special features and more focused on classic storage use with adjustable doors.
Your assessment of the process is very helpful—especially the time needed for pre-sorting and door adjustment sounds reasonable. I want to try assembling it on my own since I mostly have time in the evenings, and I’m wondering if planning 5 to 6 hours for the build is realistic so I don’t have to rush.
Are there any tips regarding common pitfalls or less obvious challenges during the PLATSA assembly? Thanks again!

Are there any tips for common pitfalls or hard-to-spot issues when assembling the PLATSA?Here are some precise tips to make the assembly more organized and time-efficient:
- Check screws and connectors individually, as small parts can sometimes be missing or duplicated during packaging, which helps avoid delays later on.
- Follow the instructions step by step and do not skip intermediate steps, since PLATSA has specific fastenings that ensure the cabinet’s stability.
- Mount the door hinges on the correct side and immediately check that they open and close freely without tension. This prevents time-consuming adjustments later.
- A cordless drill with a torque setting is useful, as overtightening can damage the panels.
An average person with some DIY experience should allow about 4-5 hours for your setup, including breaks and adjustments.
