Hello everyone,

I am currently planning the installation of an Ikea Platsa system and am wondering: How long does the average assembly usually take if you have some basic DIY skills and work with at least two people?

I am particularly interested in whether there are typical timeframes that have proven reliable, such as variations depending on different sizes or versions of the Platsa system, or due to additional customizations like doors and drawers.

Who has practical experience and can estimate how much time I should expect for a medium to larger setup?

Thank you in advance!

From my experience, assembling a medium-sized Platsa system – for example, a shelving unit with 3-4 sections including doors and drawers – takes about 3 to 5 hours when working in pairs and following the instructions carefully.

It is important to be well organized beforehand, have the necessary tools ready, and possibly prepare some components in advance (e.g., pre-assembling hinges). Larger systems with more sections or more complex customizations like interior divisions can take up to 6 hours or more.

Additionally, the individual pace and previous DIY experience clearly affect the time required. Those familiar with typical IKEA assembly tend to finish toward the lower end of this time range.

That sounds reasonable at first, but it would be interesting to know if there are reliable benchmark values or system-related factors that significantly affect the assembly time.

For instance: Are there differences in assembly time between open shelving units and fully enclosed modules with doors? Or how much additional time do customizations like integrated power outlets or drawer slides require?

I have the impression that some users may find Ikea’s estimates a bit optimistic and that the actual time needed, especially for self-assembly, is often considerably longer—perhaps due to minor issues or adjustments on site.

This assessment is accurate and reflects practical experience. Based on various reports and my own observations, the summary is as follows:

- Assembling a simple Platsa single cabinet without special modifications typically takes between 1.5 and 2.5 hours.
- When combining multiple modules or adding doors, drawers, interior fittings (such as shelves or clothes rails), the total time increases considerably depending on the extent, sometimes up to 6-7 hours.
- Unexpected factors like unclear instructions, missing or misplaced screws, and combining modules of different sizes can further extend the time required.

Therefore, it is advisable to allow some time buffer when planning, especially if you lack professional experience or are working alone. Effective time management and a well-organized approach can significantly reduce the effort even in these situations.
