Hello everyone,

I am planning to assemble a Hemnes furniture piece from Ikea, but I have no prior experience with their furniture. I am particularly interested in how long the assembly typically takes for first-time users. It would be helpful if you could include which exact furniture piece you assembled, whether you worked alone or with someone else, and how difficult you found the process. Any tips or advice that might speed up or simplify the assembly are also welcome.

I am looking for a realistic estimate of the time commitment a complete beginner can expect when assembling furniture from the Ikea Hemnes range. Thank you in advance for sharing your experiences!

I would like to add that individual skills play a very important role. Since Sauvin explicitly mentioned first-time users, we have to assume that there is no prior experience with DIY or that working with assembly instructions is unfamiliar.

In such cases, 3 to 4 hours for a simple chest of drawers is quite normal. The Hemnes series has the advantage that the furniture becomes generally stable through clamps and fairly precise drillings, as long as the instructions are followed step by step.

However, the following points are critical for time and effort:
- Careful reading and understanding of the individual steps
- Correct use of cam screws and dowels
- Proper alignment of the drawer slides
- Caution when tightening to avoid material stress

I would recommend taking your time and not rushing. This ultimately increases satisfaction with the result and reduces rework.

The duration varies between 1 and 4 hours depending on the piece of furniture and experience.

Working in pairs is always faster, but for a complete beginner, 3 hours is realistic.

For a somewhat larger Hemnes piece (e.g., dressers or beds), I would estimate an average of 2.5 to 4 hours for first-time users

I can only agree with that. Last year, I assembled a Hemnes bed myself, which took about 4.5 hours in total, working alone and very carefully. Especially with beds, it is important to pay close attention to the proper installation of the slatted frame and screws, as mistakes here can affect both the overall appearance and stability later on.

An important recommendation is to visually check all parts for completeness before starting, including the screw packages, and to have a screw set supplement on hand from Ikea in case small replacement parts are missing.

It also makes sense to measure the planned space for longer furniture in advance to avoid stress when positioning it finally.

If anyone has further questions about assembling a Hemnes bed, feel free to ask.

Exactly, that’s the key point. Even experienced craftsmen can sometimes be surprised by Ikea, as the fit is intentionally optimized within a certain tolerance range to avoid costly milling work.

That is practically essential. Especially with Hemnes, several types of screws are used, and using the wrong ones exclusively can quickly lead to premature failure if the furniture piece does not fit together properly.

Furthermore, I would recommend having a dedicated workspace with enough surface area and good lighting. This not only makes sorting easier but also greatly improves checking the individual parts during assembly.

To fully address your question: Based on the information I have gathered, assembly times for first-time users of the Ikea Hemnes furniture generally fall within the following ranges:

- Simple pieces (e.g., nightstands): 1 to 1.5 hours
- Medium-sized dressers with drawers: 2.5 to 3.5 hours
- Large furniture such as beds: 3.5 to 5 hours

These estimates refer to a single person without much prior experience. Having a second person assist can reduce the time by approximately 20–30%.

For a smooth assembly process, careful planning, taking sufficient breaks, and preparing the right tools are recommended.
