Hello everyone,

I’m currently planning to get a new IKEA Platsa furniture unit and would like to get a realistic estimate in advance: how long does it usually take to assemble IKEA Platsa furniture? I’m especially interested in the assembly time for individual modules—not just the cabinet itself, but including shelves, doors, and any drawers.

I have some experience with IKEA furniture but am not an expert assembler, so a realistic time estimate would be very helpful. Maybe you could also share tips on which steps tend to be the most time-consuming and whether it’s better to plan as a solo assembler or if it’s advisable to get some help.

Thanks in advance for your insights!

Hey Listu58,

A few months ago, I assembled a small version of a Platsa wardrobe, and honestly, if you roughly follow the instructions, it takes about 1.5 to 2 hours for a single module.

Keep in mind that doors and drawers take extra time—the alignment and adjustment, especially towards the end, can be quite time-consuming. Tip: If you’re doing it alone, take short breaks now and then, or else screwing everything together can get frustrating after a while. 😉

It’s best to have a helping hand if possible, especially for the alignment. Otherwise, have fun and remember, “the journey is the reward” 😄!

Hello Listu58,

to answer your question in detail, we should break down the assembly times into individual work steps, as the overall process varies depending on prior experience:

- Preparation and sorting of parts: approximately 15-20 minutes.
- Assembly of the base frame: 45-60 minutes, here you should work very carefully to avoid compromising stability.
- Installation of the shelves: about 10 minutes.
- Mounting of doors or drawers: 30-45 minutes, depending on the number and complexity.
- Adjustment and fine-tuning (e.g., aligning doors): 20-25 minutes.

In total, that amounts to around 2.5 to 3 hours for a single module if you do everything alone and prioritize accuracy.

One technical note: check whether the Platsa system you want to purchase is based on adjustable feet or fixed legs – alignment significantly affects the door adjustment.

It would also be interesting to know if you already have all the necessary tools at home or if you plan to get additional equipment, as this can strongly influence the time needed.

Are there already preferences regarding module types or accessories so that I can give you an even more accurate estimate?

In my experience, that is a very accurate estimate. I would add that it’s helpful to carefully read through the step-by-step instructions before starting and, most importantly, to keep track of which fittings belong where during assembly.

Here is my short guide for assembling Platsa:

- Sort the components by type and size so you don’t have to search for parts while screwing.
- Start with the base frame and work methodically from there.
- Pay close attention to alignment during assembly, and try to tighten the screws neither too tightly nor too loosely.
- Take your time with the doors, as adjusting the hinges can be tricky at first.
- If you want to be absolutely sure, take intermediate steps by standing the unit up to check the fit.

I often have to correct estimates when people rush and then need to disassemble several parts again – investing a bit more time initially will help you succeed faster in the end.

1.5 to 3 hours per module is realistic.

With a helper, you can complete it faster; otherwise, plan for 2 to 3 hours. Adjusting doors takes the most time.
