Hello everyone,

I’m about to buy an IKEA Hemnes shelving unit and want to assemble it by myself. My question is how long does it usually take to put together this type of furniture without any help?

I’m referring to the classic Hemnes shelf, for example, the 3-shelf model, which is quite standard in most apartments. I have basic DIY skills and am familiar with IKEA’s typical assembly process, but I want to set realistic time expectations so I can complete the project in one go.

How long did it take you, especially if you assembled it entirely on your own? Are there any tips on how to reduce the time needed effectively?

Thanks in advance for your input!

90 to 120 minutes is realistic.

Important: Lay out the parts, sort the screws, read the instructions carefully, and use a cordless screwdriver.

Nothing special otherwise.

I can fully agree with that! Good preparation is essential.

I would also like to add that it is especially important not to apply too much force when assembling the back panel. It is designed to increase stability, but rushing the installation can sometimes cause slight bending or misalignment, which may require rework.

If you work quickly, it can take as little as one hour for one person, but that only works if everything goes smoothly and you are familiar with the system. Otherwise, 1.5 hours is a realistic estimate.
