Hello everyone,
I am considering purchasing some furniture from the IKEA Hemnes series, mainly because of the design and wood appearance. Since I live in a shared flat and the furniture will likely be subjected to heavy use, I am particularly interested in the question: How long does IKEA Hemnes actually last under intensive use?
By intensive use, I mean furniture that is loaded several times a day, such as dressers, beds, or cabinets that are frequently used, sometimes by multiple people at once.
Do any of you have experience or insights on how durable this furniture is and how long it holds up in such conditions?
I would appreciate your assessments and opinions very much.

I’m interested to know: Where exactly do you see Hemnes as problematic under "intensive use"?
It’s well known that Ikea furniture isn’t comparable to expensive solid wood furniture made by traditional carpenters. For its price range, however, Hemnes is quite solid. I would differentiate the term "intensive"—do you mean constant rearranging, sustained sitting load, or impacts?
Real solid wood can develop cracks with continuous heavy use, and dowel joints tend to loosen over time. If you plan to put a lot of strain on the furniture, reinforcing it with additional screws might be a good idea.

IKEA Hemnes is generally considered robust because it is made from solid wood. That reassures me, thank you. In addition to the tips – do you think it makes sense to keep spare parts on hand, or is it better to order them only when needed? Sometimes I worry that suitable replacements might no longer be available later.

This is in a shared apartment where furniture is sometimes not handled very carefully.
I want to understand whether Hemnes really holds up long-term under these conditions, or if additional reinforcement should be expected.
Bauteo, for your situation I would recommend:
- Check the fit of all parts before assembly
- Tighten screws and fittings securely, and if possible, add small metal brackets at the corners
- Do not use the furniture as seating or a step stool, even if it seems convenient at times
Based on experience, the Hemnes series lasts 5-7 years with normal to intensive use when some maintenance is done. Replacing screws is common, but major damage is rare.

Hey Bauteo! I love my Hemnes furniture – not only does it look great, but it’s also quite sturdy. 😊
Everything has held up for over 3 years like new, even though I live in a busy shared apartment and everything gets a lot of use. Of course, occasionally tightening or replacing parts is needed, but for the price, I think it’s excellent!
So, if you take care of the material and don’t intentionally hammer on it, you can look forward to good durability!

An important aspect is the quality of assembly. When the furniture is properly put together, it gives you a sense of durability.
I personally had Hemnes furniture that lasted a long time despite heavy use in a shared apartment. However, problems can sometimes occur, especially with a lot of weight on shelves or sitting on dressers. For me, the key is that small repairs and adjustments usually help keep things going.
So, there is no guarantee, but it offers a solid price-performance ratio.

One last question for everyone: Does anyone have experience with maintaining solid wood furniture from Hemnes? Do you need to oil it regularly or do something similar to extend its lifespan? Or is just regular wiping enough?
