Hello everyone,

I am considering purchasing the Ikea Brimnes wardrobe for my bedroom. Since I organize my outfits there daily and occasionally hang up pants and jackets, I am interested in how long this piece of furniture typically lasts with regular, everyday use.

Perhaps someone here has practical experience regarding its durability or load-bearing capacity? I am especially interested in aspects like the stability of the hinges, the quality of the drawer slides, and the overall sturdiness over the years.

What are your assessments based on everyday use? Thanks for your feedback!

Hello golopo,

before I address your question directly, it would be helpful to know what kind of daily use you have in mind. Do you mainly use the wardrobe for hanging heavier clothing items like winter coats, or more for the drawers for T-shirts and accessories?

Regarding durability: The Ikea Brimnes is made from medium-density fiberboard (MDF) coated with melamine resin. These materials generally offer good resistance to moisture and scratches but are not quite as sturdy as solid wood.

Hinges and drawer slides are usually made of metal and plastic. The quality is reasonable for the price, but with very intensive use—for example, opening and closing several drawers daily with somewhat heavier contents—the fittings should be checked after a few years and possibly replaced to maintain stability.

Personally, I would rate the Brimnes as durable for about 5 to 7 years under normal use, depending on how carefully the pieces are handled. Proper assembly is also important; secure fixing greatly affects stability and longevity.

Do you plan to assemble the wardrobe yourself? Experience with assembly can be crucial, especially because screws and joints need to be fitted correctly.

Hey golopo!

I’ve been using the Brimnes for over three years now and I have to say: I’m really satisfied! 😄 The drawers still slide very smoothly every day, no damage or anything. Of course, it’s not a designer piece made of solid oak, but for the price, it’s great! 👍

What I especially like is the stability, even when you put a bit more inside. My family uses the cabinet daily and so far no problems. So, unless you’re planning to use it for heavy-duty storage, you’ll enjoy it for a long time!

Just go for it, the cabinet is worth it!

Brimnes reliably lasts about 4 to 6 years with daily use, provided it is used properly and assembled with care. Drawers and hinges can be adjusted or replaced over time.

Sounds great already! At that price, you really can’t complain, even if it doesn’t last forever. 🕰️

I’ve heard that IKEA furniture is basically designed to provide perfect service for 5–7 years – after that, you usually start to see some signs of wear, but not a complete breakdown.

So: If you assemble the Brimnes properly and don’t go at it with chainsaws, the furniture should easily keep up with your everyday use. Good luck with it! 🍀

Hello golopo,

I would like to add that daily use also depends a lot on how you handle the wardrobe. Doors and drawers should not be slammed shut, as this protects the hinges and sliding rails.

If you plan to store many heavy clothing items such as coats or shoes, you might want to consider additional reinforcements or distribute the weight across several pieces of furniture.

In general, the Brimnes is well made, but as a particleboard piece, it cannot be compared to solid wood. With careful maintenance, however, the wardrobe can definitely last 7 years or more.

I hope this helps you!
