Hello everyone,

I am currently looking into the durability of IKEA Pax wardrobe doors in everyday use and would like to learn how long such a door realistically lasts with daily opening and closing, without significant damage or loss of function.

Specifically, I am interested in:
- How long do the hinges and mechanical parts typically last?
- Are there common weak points in the doors that tend to cause problems after some time?
- How often is it usually necessary to readjust or replace parts with daily use?
- Does anyone have experience with particular stresses, such as high humidity or very frequent opening?

I would appreciate reliable user experiences or technical assessments to better estimate the lifespan of Pax wardrobe doors under real-life conditions.

Thank you in advance!

Hello Zoekau,

Based on technical specifications and user experience, IKEA Pax wardrobe doors typically have a lifespan of at least 5 to 10 years with daily use.

- The hinges are usually reinforced with metal components and designed for about 50,000 opening cycles.
- Weak points often occur in the plastic parts of the hinge mechanisms or the magnetic catches.
- Regular adjustments every 1 to 2 years are common, especially for large doors.

It is important that the doors are not overloaded and that the screws are tightened properly after installation. Occasional cleaning of the hinges also helps reduce wear.

Moisture can slightly reduce the lifespan, especially if engineered wood parts swell and warp as a result.

Hello Zoekau,

I’m happy to provide a structured overview of how long a Pax wardrobe door typically lasts with daily use:

1. Material & Construction:
- The doors are usually made from coated wood-based panels, with surfaces that offer limited resistance to moisture.
- The hinges are mostly metal with plastic components.

2. Mechanical Stress:
- After around 15 years of daily opening and closing, plastic guides often show signs of wear.
- Screws may loosen over time, requiring readjustment.

3. Common Weak Points:
- Hinges: These can start to stick or become stiff after several years.
- Handles and fastenings: These tend to loosen over time.

4. Care & Maintenance:
- Regularly tightening screws is recommended.
- Applying a small amount of lubricant to the hinges can extend their lifespan.

5. Impact of Environmental Conditions:
- High humidity can cause the material to swell.

In summary:
- With careful installation and maintenance, Pax doors can typically last 8 to 12 years without issues.
- Less maintenance and harsh conditions can reduce their lifespan to 3 to 5 years.

Hope this helps!

I find the figure of 50,000 cycles pretty useful to imagine! That would mean, with about 3 openings per day, a durability of around 45 years – at least in theory. 😅

But of course, in reality, wear and tear often shows up on the smaller plastic parts, and rough handling doesn’t help either.

I’ve had my Pax doors for about 7 years now – they are used around 5 to 6 times daily in our household, and so far, I’ve only had to readjust the hinges once, which was quick to fix. No major issues so far, no warping or anything like that.

I think these parts are quite sturdy, as long as you don’t slam them shut!

The doors will last at least 5 years under normal use without significant issues. After that, adjustments will be necessary. The material is solid but not a permanent solution for heavy-duty use.

Hey,

my experience with Pax doors: I open and close the units several times a day, and after about 6 years, one hinge wore out and had to be replaced. Nothing serious, the replacement part was inexpensive.

I also recommend not putting too much weight on the doors, so avoid hanging backpacks or similar items on them – this speeds up wear and tear!

Overall, I find the doors very durable for the price. You get a lot of value for your money.
