HoracebuI have a question that probably concerns many of you, especially if you rely on the IKEA Hemnes range: How durable are IKEA Hemnes furniture pieces with daily use? I'm interested in the longevity of the drawers and hinges as well as the surfaces under regular wear and tear. Are there any experiences regarding wear, material fatigue, or deformation when, for example, using the Hemnes dresser or Hemnes bed every day? And if anyone knows of differences between the various furniture items, please feel free to share. I'm considering getting this range but want to avoid furniture that wears out too quickly or requires frequent repairs.
That is a good and quite detailed question! The durability of Hemnes furniture largely depends on how intensively and for what purposes it is used. Hemnes is basically made of solid pine wood, which is significantly more robust than particleboard or MDF commonly found in other furniture.
- The drawers have simple metal runners, which can become a bit stiff over time with heavy use because they are not ball-bearing slides. Regular cleaning and occasional oiling help a lot.
- The hinges are standard metal but may become slightly misaligned due to the wood material reacting to fluctuations in humidity, causing minimal warping.
- The surfaces are usually lacquered or waxed, providing protection against scratches and moisture, but they are not indestructible.
My personal experience after five years of daily use of a Hemnes chest of drawers: there are minor signs of wear on the edges and the hinges have loosened a bit, but everything is still fully functional.
I would be interested to know: what exactly do you plan to use the furniture for? That often has a major impact on its durability. For example, bedroom furniture, living room storage, or a child’s room?

In addition to Parbo’s advice, I would like to share some tips on how to extend the lifespan of Hemnes furniture with daily use:
- Avoid standing moisture on the wooden surfaces, as pine wood tends to absorb moisture and can deteriorate more quickly because of it.
- Regularly check screws and fittings, tighten them as needed, or secure them with a drop of wood glue or appropriate threadlocker to prevent them from loosening or shifting.
- For drawers, I recommend using light silicone sprays on the runners to maintain smooth gliding even after years of use.
- When assembling, follow the instructions carefully and consider adding wooden dowels or suitable brackets if the furniture feels unstable in heavily stressed areas.
Summary: With some care and attention, a Hemnes piece of furniture can easily last 7-10 years of daily use without significant signs of wear. Naturally, solid wood will always undergo slight changes over time, as it is a natural material.
Based on my experience with Hemnes in both office and home settings, I can confirm that it represents a solid mid-range product. It is also important to consider whether the furniture is subjected to heavy daily use or mainly used for storage, as this significantly affects its durability.

Especially with drawers that are used daily, you notice after a while that the runners wear down a bit. However, this is not a major concern for me, since the runners can be replaced relatively easily without having to dismantle the entire piece of furniture.
Overall, I consider the Hemnes series to be very durable, as long as the furniture is not overloaded. It is important to always observe the maximum load capacity of the drawers, otherwise the smooth running of the slides will quickly deteriorate.
A small tip: an annual visual inspection and, if necessary, retightening of the screws can help prevent bigger problems in the long run.
I understand your concerns about durability. I bought a Hemnes dresser nearly 4 years ago, and it’s been part of my everyday life at home, with kids and everything that comes with it. Of course, there are signs of wear, especially on the corners and handles.
That’s exactly how it is for me as well. Functionally, it’s great, and unless you’re very particular, the wear hardly shows. The furniture becomes part of daily life – which somehow makes it more endearing. It’s also important to me not to apply too much pressure; the furniture is sturdy, but it’s not a tank.
What annoys me a bit, though, is that after several years, the surface finish wears off in some spots. However, in my opinion, this is not a major issue. Just wipe it gently on a regular basis, and the wood will stay looking nice longer.
