KoberndI recently purchased a Brimnes chest of drawers set from Ikea and have been wondering about the typical lifespan of the drawer runners used in this furniture. My question is: How long do the Ikea Brimnes drawer runners generally remain durable and reliable under normal use? Specifically, I’m interested in experience-based information regarding common signs of wear, the average period they function smoothly, and any special maintenance tips to extend their service life. Primarily, this is so I can estimate when repairs or replacement parts might be needed. I look forward to your experiences and insights!
The drawer slides of the Ikea Brimnes series are durable enough for regular household use but are not high-performance components. By "regular use," I mean daily opening and closing under normal load conditions—so no excessive weight or rough handling.
Typically, these rails last 3 to 5 years without issues before wear signs appear, such as sticking movement or loose mechanisms. The material is usually zinc-coated steel with plastic parts, which provides corrosion resistance but is not exceptionally robust.
For maintenance: it helps to occasionally clean the runners of dust and apply narrow silicone or Teflon sprays sparingly. WD-40 or oily lubricants are less suitable because they tend to attract dust.
If the slides start sticking or running unevenly, replacing them is worthwhile—Ikea sells these parts separately at an affordable price. In summary, I would estimate the lifespan to be at least 4 years with careful use, possibly longer.

Typically, these rails last easily 3-5 years before signs of wear such as sticking movement or loose mechanisms appear.I can confirm that. In my case, all the guides in the Brimnes started to slightly grind after about 4 years. Replacement is simple, and IKEA offers suitable parts.
I have had the Brimnes dresser for almost 5 years now and I’m really impressed with how long the drawer slides have lasted! 😄 Sure, 4 years might not sound very long at first, but considering the price and everyday use, I think that’s quite good.
Maybe I can encourage some of you: if you notice the drawers starting to stick or not sliding as smoothly, try gently cleaning the slides with a dry cloth and then applying silicone spray from an aerosol can onto the runners. That worked wonders for me!
By the way, I think Ikea offers good value for money here. The Brimnes drawer slides are not premium metal tracks, but they’re definitely solid for everyday furniture. So if anyone is buying new: don’t worry, they’ll last quite a while!

How long are the Ikea Brimnes drawer slides durable and reliable under normal use?Regarding durability, Ikea Brimnes drawer slides are typically made of zinc-coated steel with plastic components. This combination ensures a service life of about 3 to 5 years under average load and proper use.
The main weak point is the plastic gliders, which wear down with frequent use and cause less smooth drawer movement. The mechanism itself usually lasts longer, provided there is no overloading.
For maintenance, it is recommended to clean the rails from dirt and dust and occasionally apply a dry lubricant, preferably silicone-based. Lubricating oils are not recommended because they attract dust.
If the slides are worn out, Ikea offers replacement parts that are easy to install without special tools. This allows for simple repairs and significantly extends the furniture’s lifespan.
In summary: The sturdy construction of the Brimnes combined with regular cleaning ensures a moderate lifespan that is sufficient for normal household use.
