Hello everyone, I’m interested in the durability of Billy shelves with daily use. Specifically, I want to know how long you can reasonably expect these shelves to remain stable when used every day—whether for storing books, folders, or occasionally heavier items. Are there any experiences in this forum regarding the average lifespan with daily use, for example in an office or home workspace? I’m hoping for realistic feedback that goes beyond warranty periods and reflects actual service life under normal conditions.
For everyone who uses their Billy shelf daily, I have put together a few tips to help ensure it lasts as long as possible:
1. Installation: Make sure all anchors and screws are tightly secured. A sturdy wall attachment with brackets also increases stability.
2. Load: Avoid point loads. It’s better to store heavy items on the lower shelves.
3. Maintenance: Regularly remove dust and protect the bottom edges from moisture.
4. Use: Avoid using the shelves as seats or for climbing ;-).
If you follow these points, I believe a lifespan of 10+ years is realistic.

The construction of the BILLY shelf is based on particleboard with a melamine coating. These materials are sensitive to high humidity and excessive loads.
My data from personal projects and reports from other users indicate that the service life with daily use can vary but typically ranges between 8 and 12 years, provided that the assembly is done correctly and the load limits are respected.

To my knowledge, there are no official long-term studies on BILLY shelves that guarantee an exact durability period. However, user reports indicate that the shelves can easily last for a decade with daily use.
Proper care and occasional tightening of the screws are important to prevent damage over time.

Recommendation: do not exceed 30 kg (66 lbs) per shelf. You’ve summarized that well, although I’m sometimes skeptical whether everyone actually follows it.
I often notice people trying to fit in as much as possible without considering the load limits. Especially with BILLY shelves, it’s really important to ensure even weight distribution. I appreciate seeing reminders like this here. :-)

If you need to store heavy loads, I recommend opting for alternatives or reinforced models. A combination of wall anchoring and high-quality shelving can also greatly extend the lifespan.

I am also interested in whether anyone has experience with the effects of moisture, for example if the shelf is placed in a basement or hobby room that is not completely dry.
Are there signs of wear such as swelling or warping? And how does the finish hold up in the long term? Thanks in advance.
