How large should the patio roof be?

Hello everyone,

I need help planning the roof for my patio.

We want to cover our patio. There are two options to do this.

A short version and a longer version that connects to the house wall.

I prefer not to mention the reasons why one or the other option seems better for us, so I don’t influence anyone here.

What do you think makes more sense or looks more balanced? But above all, what is the more logical and durable solution? Thank you very much!

But I would still not recommend installing opaque canopies in front of windows or patio doors.

Above all, one should avoid placing solid canopies above light wells. Realistically, the only option I see for the original poster is a glass roof.

I thought so at first too, but maybe he means a glazed opening in the roof covering? Since there is a window at that spot?

The time window during which light shines through the dome into the kitchen is likely to be quite short. In the west / evening, the sun is lower, which makes it even less useful.

Take a look at similar roofing structures among your acquaintances.
What speaks against using all-glass?

We chose the shorter terrace roof last year, but in retrospect, we would have preferred to go with the longer one.

Under a glass canopy on the south or southwest side, it can also become very uncomfortably hot, especially since one side is adjacent to a wall anyway. In my opinion, the shorter version looks better purely from an aesthetic point of view.

The question is also: do you want a patio area that is not covered, meaning it is fully exposed to sun and weather? That can definitely be intentional, for example, to sunbathe on a lounge chair without being under a roof, or to place plants there that don’t need constant watering since they can still receive rain, and so on.
