ᐅ How easy is it to expand an IKEA Platsa system later on?

Some time ago, I purchased the IKEA Platsa system for my living room. Now I’m wondering: how easy is it to expand the IKEA Platsa system later on if I want to add more modules or rearrange the setup?

I am especially interested in whether IKEA offers specific connectors or adapters to ensure the expansion remains stable, and if the process is similar or different for the various module types (cabinets, drawers, shelving units). It would also be helpful to know if the assembly instructions provided make it easy for non-professionals to manage, or if a certain level of DIY skill is recommended.

Who here has experience with this and can share tips on what pitfalls to avoid? How flexible is the system in practice when it comes to later expansions?

I also enjoyed the system because you can redesign it as you like – almost like adult Lego!

I can fully agree with that, but at first I was a bit hesitant, wondering if everything would really be that straightforward. Especially the later addition of modules made me pause a little.

It’s really important to take your time and double-check if you’re unsure whether all parts are correctly in place. Otherwise, small mistakes can be frustrating later on. But overall, the Platsa system was very easy to expand for me.

The expansion of the IKEA Platsa system should always be carried out with the following considerations:

- Structural load: Adding more modules changes the weight distribution. This may require secure anchoring to the wall.
- Precise measurements before the expansion to avoid gaps and improper fitting.
- Ensuring that all modules are compatible – not all current and older versions are fully compatible.
- Using the connection hardware provided by IKEA for secure assembly.

By following these points, an expansion can be implemented solidly and durably.

I expanded my Platsa modules later on and can say that the included connectors are more than sufficient if used correctly.

What I found especially important was to connect the new unit to the existing one using sturdy corner brackets and then secure the entire setup to the wall. This is the only way to keep everything stable yet flexible within the room.

If multiple modules are to be combined, additional wall fixing is recommended to prevent damage and accidents.

This is exactly the point I always emphasize. Many people completely underestimate the importance of wall fixing. While the Platsa modules are relatively sturdy, wall fixing becomes mandatory when expanding or building higher structures.

Also, if you plan to add doors or drawers, make sure to maintain the correct installation height. A common mistake is misaligning drawers, which then causes them to stick when opening.

Thank you to everyone who has responded so far! Your insights have been very helpful, especially the emphasis on wall mounting and the correct use of fasteners.

The issue of compatibility between older and newer modules was also mentioned, which is good to know. I will make sure to carefully check which modules I am using before any expansion.

Finally, one question remains: Is there an easy way to maintain a visually consistent front when adding extension parts despite the modular design? Or do you have to accept small differences?
