Hello everyone, I am considering disassembling some of my IKEA Billy bookcases and rearranging them in a different configuration. I am mainly interested in how easy or difficult it is to take the bookcases apart without damaging any parts. Are there any specific tips or procedures to keep in mind? And how stable do the bookcases remain after being taken apart and reassembled multiple times? I look forward to any experiences and advice on the topic "How easily can Billy bookcases be disassembled and rearranged?" Thanks in advance!

I can only say: Don’t panic when taking apart the Billy shelves, they’re really solid little guys 🙂! If you remove the shelves and are honest – yes, a bit of finesse is needed, especially with the dowels. But with patience and maybe a sip of coffee on the side, it works great. And the advantage: you can rebuild them as many times as you want, almost like a Lego set for adults. Just enjoy it – it’s no big deal 🙂!

What about sturdy shelves that have been installed for a long time? Does the material deteriorate more, or are there other difficulties?

With extended use, the joints may sometimes become a bit tighter, but this can usually be resolved easily with moderate force and the right tools. The main issue is that especially particleboard around the drill holes can swell or chip due to moisture or mechanical stress. This can negatively affect the shelf’s long-term stability. However, with careful handling, the shelves can remain reliably usable even after several disassemblies.
