Kaukin59Hello everyone, I am planning to buy some Ikea Hemnes furniture, especially dressers and nightstands, which will be used daily. My main question is: How durable are the Hemnes pieces from Ikea with daily use in terms of material quality, stability, and wear? I am asking specifically because I read that Hemnes is mostly made of solid pine wood, which sounds sturdy but might also be prone to scratches and warping. Can anyone share experience or professional insight regarding long-term durability and maintenance? How do these pieces hold up in everyday use—such as weight on the drawers, frequent opening and closing, or cleaning? I’m looking forward to your opinions and experiences.
Your question about the durability of Hemnes furniture under daily use is well posed, as everyday usage naturally places different demands on furniture compared to pieces used only occasionally. Based on my experience and some research, the Hemnes range is mostly made of solid wood, specifically pine, which is generally sturdy but also has certain limitations.
- Solid wood has the advantage that minor scratches and dents can often be repaired or refinished.
- However, pine wood tends to react quite strongly to moisture and temperature changes, which can be problematic with heavy use—such as in kitchens or damp rooms.
- Hemnes furniture is generally well-made, but in my view, caution is advised with heavy loads in drawers or sustained high pressure on surfaces, as deformation may occur.
I would recommend maintaining the furniture well, treating it regularly with suitable oils or waxes, and avoiding constant exposure to direct sunlight. If you use the furniture daily for carrying heavier loads, it might be worth distributing the weight to reduce stress.

Regarding Hemnes: I bought a dresser from this series two years ago, which is used every day. What I’ve noticed is that the wood feels relatively resilient despite frequent use, but small scratches on the surface are already visible. I think this is quite normal for solid wood and also shows that the material is genuine.
I’m not worried because I’ve learned to see small marks as character. I believe that with daily use, durability largely depends on proper care.
Could you also share whether you use the furniture in a household with children or pets? That can bring additional requirements.

I bought a dresser from this series two years ago, and it is used every day. This brings me to a technical point: Hemnes furniture is often made from pine wood sourced from sustainable forestry, which has a uniform solid wood structure. However, it’s important to understand that the furniture also uses glued components to ensure structural stability. The surface is usually sealed with lacquer, which offers protection but can lose durability over time with daily heavy use, especially around drawer slides and edges.
Another point I want to address is the joining technique. Hemnes primarily uses screws and wooden dowels, which are quite sturdy with regular use, but after several years, drawer slides and glued joints can loosen. This is normal and can often be fixed by tightening screws or reapplying glue.
Environmental factors also play a role: fluctuating humidity causes pine wood to expand and contract, which can create stresses in the material over time. Maintaining a consistent indoor humidity level and avoiding excessive moisture exposure is recommended.
How exactly are you using the furniture? Are you using it as storage with contents frequently changing, or simply as regular furniture? This can significantly affect its durability.
To clarify your question further: I have been using Hemnes nightstands myself for about 4 years, daily for books, lamps, and small items.
A few tips for durability with everyday use:
- Avoid excessive weight in the drawers; I would recommend a maximum of 10–15 kg (22–33 lbs).
- The drawer slides are sturdy, but they can wear out faster if overloaded.
- For maintenance, I suggest cleaning the wood regularly with a damp, not wet, cloth, and treating it with furniture oil if needed.
- For scratches, very fine sandpaper helps, followed by an appropriate wood oil.
I think Hemnes is suitable for daily use as long as it is not overstrained. For very heavy use (e.g., continuous use in an office with heavy loads), it might be worth considering a sturdier version.
