Hello everyone,
I am considering buying the Platsa system from IKEA because I need flexible storage that can adapt to different room layouts. However, I have some concerns about how stable this furniture really is with frequent use. Specifically, I am interested in how well it withstands mechanical stress with daily use — for example, frequent opening and closing of doors and drawers, occasionally placing heavier items on the shelves, and possible movement when rearranging.
My main focus is understanding how durable and sturdy the Platsa construction is — compared to other IKEA systems but also within the general furniture segment. Are there any experiences with how the materials and joints hold up under intensive use? Creaking, loosening, warping, or perhaps premature failure of screws or shelf boards?
I look forward to detailed, practical experience reports or well-founded assessments, especially from those who have been using this furniture series regularly for some time. Thanks in advance!

Hello @curtis51,
your concern about the stability of the IKEA Platsa furniture with frequent use is quite valid and deserves a detailed look. From a technical perspective, the Platsa components are made from a combination of particleboard with a melamine-coated surface, which is common for furniture in this price range. The connectors mainly consist of dowels, screws, and inserted metal fasteners.
With frequent use, durability largely depends on how the cabinet is installed (e.g., wall mounting), how carefully it is assembled, and the loads applied. Particleboard tends to swell and warp when overloaded or exposed to moisture. Additionally, with intensive use, the screws can loosen over time, requiring retightening.
A crucial point is the fixing of the shelves – these are usually secured with plastic pins and are not designed for very heavy loads. I recommend avoiding storing very heavy items there permanently, instead distributing these onto the lower, more load-bearing sections.
What is your specific usage scenario? Is the cabinet mainly used as a wardrobe, bookshelf, or kitchen unit? How often is it opened? The rate of wear can vary significantly depending on usage.

I would like to critically note that IKEA furniture like Platsa often makes conscious compromises in stability to remain modular and affordable, considering their price and weight range. As a result, they can never be compared to solid wood or high-quality furniture sold in traditional furniture stores in terms of robustness.
From my perspective, the question is how much stability an end user can realistically expect and whether IKEA provides reliable information on maximum load capacity or recommended usage scenarios. Sales descriptions are usually vague, praising the modular design instead of providing clear technical specifications.
I would appreciate well-founded long-term test results or at least systematic experience reports to assess whether the joints and materials deteriorate over time under heavy loads. The discussions and customer reviews I am aware of tend to be subjective—either praising or criticizing—with few nuanced evaluations regarding durability under continuous stress.

I completely understand your question. The stability of a piece of furniture depends on several factors: the quality of materials, craftsmanship, assembly, and daily load. From my personal experience with the Platsa system, it is excellent for regular use in living rooms or bedrooms.
Doors and drawers can still be opened and closed without major issues even after months, but careful assembly is crucial – if done carelessly, unstable joints can develop quickly.
In my household, the furniture is used daily, sometimes storing heavy books or games. I find it important to secure the cabinet to the wall and ensure the load is evenly distributed. From my own experience, Platsa remains quite stable and shows no signs of wear as long as it is not misused.
Have you already decided how much weight you plan to put on the modules or how often they will actually be used?
Hi everyone!
I’m really impressed with Platsa and can only share positive feedback. I’ve been using the modules daily for over 2 years – in the kitchen as well as a flexible storage solution in the hallway. From my experience with stability: it’s definitely sturdy enough for everyday use! Sure, you might need to retighten screws occasionally, especially if you move or redecorate the furniture often. But that’s not a big deal.
Honestly, the workmanship and materials are excellent for the price. It’s not comparable to those $30 shelves that start wobbling or creaking after just a few weeks. Platsa can handle heavier loads too – I have a 20kg (44 lb) blender and baking molds on it, and the cabinet supports them easily.
Just one tip: be sure to tighten the connectors properly and fix the furniture to the wall; that really makes a difference! 🙂
I think you shouldn’t rule out such a flexible solution just because of exaggerated fears about stability – go ahead and buy it, and you’ll see that Platsa holds up well.
