Hello everyone,

I am currently facing the task of replacing the door hinges on my IKEA Hemnes cabinet. Over time, the hinges have shown signs of wear, and the doors no longer close properly, so I want to replace the old hinges with new ones. My question is: how exactly does the replacement of IKEA Hemnes door hinges work?

I am especially interested in the key steps to keep in mind, which tools are useful, and whether there are any specific details to watch out for that differ from other IKEA furniture. Are there particular considerations when removing and reattaching the hinges to the cabinet carcass and to the door?

I look forward to your detailed tips and experiences!

First, unhinge the door from the cabinet by usually loosening the locking mechanism on the hinges. Remove the screws of the old hinges on both the furniture and the door, replace the hinge, then rehang the door and check the adjustments. A Phillips screwdriver is typically required. Important: Do not tighten the screws too much to avoid damaging the hinge or the wood.

As an addition: Replacing the IKEA Hemnes door hinges generally follows a standard procedure but includes specific details worth noting:

- First, carefully unmount the door by pressing the hinge lock (usually a plastic tab) on the back of the furniture and separating the hinge from the cabinet-side mounting plate.
- Then, remove all screws securing the hinge to both the door and the cabinet.
- Insert the new hinge and fasten it using the existing drill holes. A PH2 (cross-head) screwdriver is often suitable for this task.
- Finally, reattach the door by placing the hinge onto the cabinet-side mounting plate and snapping the lock into place.

Regarding special features: Hemnes hinges often include a micro-adjuster that allows you to fine-tune the door alignment after hanging, without having to loosen screws again. Typically, a cross-head screwdriver and possibly a small flat-head screwdriver for adjustments are sufficient.

Careful handling is recommended, especially when working with multiple hinges, to avoid damaging pivot points or misaligning the door.

That’s a good point, but I wonder if this micro-adjustment is really enough to fix all alignment issues, especially with older furniture where the screw holes might be worn out. Does anyone have experience with Hemnes cabinets regarding whether additional steps are necessary, such as inserting dowels or altering the drilled holes?

Replacing the hinge itself should definitely be manageable with the right tools, but how can you ensure that the new hinge will hold securely over time without further modifications to the carcass?

Absolutely! It’s really satisfying to handle a small DIY job like this yourself! I replaced my Hemnes hinges a few months ago, and the micro-adjustment feature helped me align the doors perfectly afterwards. If the screw holes are still in good condition, it works great.

If the holes have become worn out, you can use small wooden dowels or wood filler to fill them and secure new screws properly. The important thing is not to rush – it’s best to start by screwing in the screws lightly, adjust the door, and then tighten fully.

I think the replacement is really worth it, as you not only restore functionality but also improve the cabinet’s appearance! Keep it up and good luck with your renovation!
