Hello everyone,

I am currently looking into storage solutions from Ikea, specifically the Platsa system. I have noticed that the old Ikea Platsa, which was sold a few years ago, seems to have significant differences compared to the current model. I am very interested in learning exactly how the old Ikea Platsa differs from the new one.

I’m not only referring to the design but also materials, assembly, flexibility in configuring the system, types of fasteners, and possible changes in dimensions or accessories. There may also be improvements that affect everyday usability, such as stability or ease of handling.

Some reports mention that certain components of the old Platsa are no longer compatible with the newer versions. Who has experience or reliable knowledge on this? Thanks in advance!

The old Platsa had a different back panel, which was slightly thinner and less sturdy.

The new models come with reinforced panels and offer more accessories, especially in terms of interior layout.

I would like to provide a structured overview:

- Material: The old Platsa mainly used particleboard with somewhat thinner laminate, while the new version focuses more on sturdier MDF panels.
- Dimensions: The basic measurements have largely remained the same, but the new range includes some wider and taller modules.
- Assembly: Originally, connections were mostly secured with screws and hooks, whereas the new model increasingly uses metal connectors, which improves stability.
- Accessories: The new Platsa offers more inserts, drawer options, and types of doors.
- Compatibility: The old and new systems are not always directly compatible modularly, as the attachment points have mainly changed.

A common mistake I keep seeing is buyers trying to fit old doors onto new frames; this almost never works without modifications.

I can confirm that. The new back panels are not only thicker but also stiffer. This makes the furniture more stable, especially for taller configurations.

I would like to add exactly that: especially when combining old and new components, it is important to pay attention to the exact measurements of doors and hinges. The new hinges often feature click systems, which make installation easier and more stable, but the old doors do not have this mechanism.

Additionally, the new Platsa offers more options for interior organization, often resulting in better use of space. The new system is more flexible in terms of depth and width. So, anyone planning to simply replace old modules with new ones should expect some adjustments.

I recommend comparing the exact specifications before purchasing and possibly asking Ikea for compatibility lists.

The new Platsa modules are easier to assemble because the parts are better numbered and the instructions are clearer. Additionally, Ikea has improved the cable management, which is useful for electronic devices inside the cabinets.
