Hello everyone, I am currently planning to install an Ikea Metod base cabinet for my new kitchen and would appreciate a detailed explanation of how the installation works. I am particularly interested in the following points:

- What preparations are necessary before placing the cabinet in the kitchen?
- How can the cabinet be properly stabilized, especially considering the heavy built-in sink?
- Are there any special considerations when installing the doors and drawers, particularly since the fronts are often chosen individually?
- Finally, what tips can you offer to ensure the installation goes as smoothly as possible and to avoid problems with alignment or water connection leaks afterwards?

I look forward to your help and experiences!

Hey Lucare, great question! Installing the Metod sink cabinets is really enjoyable once you know how 😄 I’ll start with the basics:

- Preparation: The most important step is to make sure the floor is level, otherwise the cabinet will wobble later! Even better: place the cabinet in its intended spot beforehand and check how the water and drain connections are positioned.

- Stabilization: With the Metod sink cabinets, it’s crucial to adjust the leveling feet precisely. They are adjustable and ensure the cabinet stands straight. And yes, the sink adds weight and some vibrations during use, so it’s worth readjusting again!

- Doors, drawers: IKEA provides very clever fittings here that you basically just click into place. The adjustment screws are invaluable for perfectly aligning the fronts.

My tip: be patient when adjusting and work with a helper if possible. This way everything will be just perfect!

I’m happy to agree with that – when it comes to Ikea Metod sink cabinets, stay relaxed and work systematically! 😎

A little lifehack from me: Install in stages. First, assemble and align the cabinet body, then carefully screw in the feet, because they do half the work later on.

One more tip regarding the water connection: Sometimes the trap isn’t exactly where the cabinet cutout is. So check before installation if any modifications to the cutouts are needed. Don’t worry, with some patience it works perfectly!

Best motivation: Once the doors are hung and the sink is in place, it’s a really great feeling of accomplishment 😊

Hello Lucare, I completely understand your questions, especially since the Metod base cabinet for the sink is not only functional but also a key part of the kitchen.

Regarding the individual points:

- Preparation: It is important to check that the wall is even and to precisely locate the water supply and wastewater connections. This helps avoid unexpected issues later on.

- Stabilization: As mentioned, the adjustable feet are essential. Also, make sure to use the included metal brackets to connect the cabinets together – this significantly increases stability.

- Doors and drawers: The Metod fronts have a finely adjustable hinge system. If you have fronts with soft-close, be sure to test the damping and adjustment before tightening everything.

- Additional tip: Use a spirit level during the entire installation and frequently check for evenness.

If you like, I can prepare a checklist for you to ensure you don’t miss anything.

That makes sense, thank you! The floor in my kitchen is fairly level, but I’m wondering if I should place an underlay beneath the cabinet, for example, a plastic sheet to protect against moisture or damage, or is that unnecessary?

I will definitely do that. Are there specific dimensions for the metal brackets that I should consider when fixing the cabinets, or are they always standard?

And one more question: How complicated is it to install the sink into the cabinet itself? There are usually cutouts, but they need to be precise, right?

Hello Lucare,

to address your additions in detail:

- Underlay: It is very advisable to place a protective underlay beneath the sink cabinet, especially if the floors are sensitive to water or slight moisture. A thin PE plastic sheet or a special moisture protection mat never hurts and protects against rising damp.

- Metal brackets: The brackets used to connect Metod cabinets are standardized, usually about 15 cm (6 inches) long. It is important that they are made of sturdy steel and firmly secured to the cabinet carcass with screws to avoid any looseness later on. When installing, especially with the sink cabinet where more weight is expected, several brackets should be used – at the top and bottom, ideally on both sides.

- Installing the sink: Cutting the opening must be very precise; IKEA often provides pre-made templates for the cutout. The procedure varies depending on the type of sink (undermount sink, drop-in sink, or countertop sink).

• For drop-in sinks: The countertop is leveled with a spirit level, and the cutout is made with a jigsaw following the template.

• With Metod, it is important to ensure the interior layout of the cabinet is correct so there is enough space for the siphon and connections.

• Before installing, apply sealing tape around the sink to prevent water stains under the countertop.

What does your current kitchen countertop look like? Is there already a cutout, or do you still need to make one?
