Hello everyone,

I am planning to install Ikea Metod shelves in my kitchen between two existing cabinets, as I have a niche there that I want to use efficiently. However, I am unsure about the exact installation process—especially how to secure the Metod frames on the sides so that the shelving unit is stable and aligns flush with the neighboring cabinets.

Could someone explain step by step how to properly fasten the shelves between the cabinets, which measurements need to be taken precisely, and whether there is any special mounting hardware recommended? Tips on avoiding common mistakes would also be very helpful.

Looking forward to your experiences and advice!

Hello Camilla,

First, regarding the general procedure: Ikea Metod is usually assembled using so-called frame systems, which connect at the sides with dowels and connector fittings. If you want to install a shelf unit between two cabinets, it is important to measure the available space precisely, as Metod systems have standardized widths and depths.

Key points:
- Measure: take exact measurements of width, height, and depth. For the width, I recommend adding the thickness of the side panels and any cladding.
- Gap to adjacent cabinet: there should be minimal gap, ideally less than 5 mm (0.2 inches).
- Wall fixing: especially with shelves installed in recesses, it’s advisable to screw the frame to the rear wall or sides to ensure stability.

Assembly steps:
- First, assemble the bottom frame.
- Use the Metod frame components along with the included dowels and connector fittings provided in the Ikea set.
- Side clips or screws: in some cases, you can directly fix the new shelf’s cabinet side to the existing cabinet if the adjacent cabinet has appropriate pre-drilled holes or supports.

A tip: use a spirit level and, if needed, spacers to ensure the fronts align flush afterwards.

One more question: how deep are your existing cabinets? This helps to better determine how to install the back panel of the new shelf, especially if the depths differ.

Feel free to ask if you have any questions!

This is really an important tip! I once tried to cover a small gap with silicone, but it just didn’t look good, and the stability wasn’t ideal either.

Especially for shelves in alcoves, it’s advisable to secure the frame to the back wall or the sides with screws to ensure stability.

At first, I felt a bit hesitant about drilling holes, but it truly made the shelf secure, and after installation I no longer worried about it tipping over.

If you feel stressed about the assembly: don’t overthink it! The Ikea method is designed to be modular, and with some patience, you can handle it well. Planning is key here—especially measuring accurately and the order of installing the components.

Good luck!

To supplement and for precise installation between the cabinets:

1. First, take the exact internal dimensions of the niche. For Ikea Metod, the 60cm (24 inches) widths are the most common, but there are also narrower options like 40cm (16 inches) or 80cm (31 inches). Your measurements must be exact because otherwise the shelf either won’t fit or unattractive gaps will appear.

2. Keep in mind that the Metod frame is a fixed construction: there are so-called carcass elements with frame parts and panels connected by dowels and tension rods. The side walls are therefore not flexible but bound to specific dimensions.

3. For fixing between the cabinets, you can use connecting screws (Minifix, Spax, or specially designed for Metod) or angle brackets to securely join the sides together.

4. Make sure that the shelf to be installed is flush with the cabinet fronts. Small spacers can help if the niche is not perfectly rectangular.

5. The back panel of the Metod shelf is usually attached with small nails or clips, which do not provide much stability; therefore, it is essential to screw it to the wall or adjacent cabinets.

In summary: When installing between cabinets, precision in measuring and avoiding side gaps is crucial. The connection is done mechanically using dowels and screws, as well as appropriate mounting materials supplied with the Ikea Metod system or added by you.

If you have specific measurements or photos of the niche, I could assist you more precisely.

Summary:
- Measure the niche precisely.
- Choose a Metod frame that fits.
- Assemble the cabinet carcass as described.
- Use connector screws or brackets to hold the cabinet sides together.
- Secure the shelf to the wall at the back for stability.
- Check the front alignment and adjust if necessary using spacers.

This is how to install it between cabinets.
