Good morning everyone, I am planning to replace the side panels on my Ikea Metod kitchen cabinet because they are damaged and I would like to use a different color. Therefore, I am wondering how the replacement of the cabinet sides works technically.

I am particularly interested in whether you can simply unscrew the sides and attach new ones, or if you might damage the entire cabinet structure if you are not careful. Are there any special fasteners or anchors that I should be aware of?

Also, it would be helpful to know if the existing drill holes and screw holes will still fit when replacing the side panels, or if the sides may need to be adjusted.

I am familiar with some basic kitchen construction terms (assembly, carcass, side panel, etc.), but I would like to understand the exact procedure, including tools, detailed solutions, or common issues to watch out for.

I look forward to your insights and tips!

It is worth taking a close look at the dowels and attachment points.

The cabinet sides in Ikea Metod are often fixed using dowels and cam lock connectors that fit precisely into the holes. If the sides are removed and reassembled, it is important that the holes are not damaged, as this can affect the stability.

A small tip: Mark the position of the dowels and screws with a marker before disassembly. This ensures everything fits perfectly during reassembly.

If the sides are new and the drill holes do not align exactly, proper adjustment of the side panels’ width and checking the dowel positions are essential.

The cabinet is installed, meaning it is connected between two walls with other Metod cabinets.

It is important, as already mentioned, to disconnect the connection points; otherwise, there is a risk of damaging the other parts.

Additionally, I recommend checking the back panel of the cabinet. Sometimes the back panel prevents the side panel from being simply removed because it is fixed with nails or screws.

If the back panel is not removable, extra caution is necessary during disassembly. Remove the side panel slowly, without force, and loosen all visible screws.

This increases the chance that the replacement can be done without damage.

Thank you for the advice regarding the back panel. These details really help clarify things for me.

One additional question: When I remove the old side panels, how does that affect the stability of the remaining frame? Is it advisable to support or secure the cabinet somewhere during the side replacement?

I understand that the side panel contributes to the overall structure, so I’m a bit concerned about possible instability during the replacement.

That’s a valid question with a practical background. The side panels play a load-bearing role in the cabinet. Removing the side panel reduces the lateral stability and can cause the cabinet to warp.

My advice:
- Ideally, work with a partner if possible.
- Support the cabinet selectively, for example with workshop blocks or by bracing the shelves, to prevent distortion.
- Remove the side panel in one smooth movement without pulling it at an angle, as this can damage the fasteners.
- Use a spirit level when installing the new side to ensure everything is aligned properly.

Have you ever fully disassembled the cabinet before, or has it always been assembled completely up to now?

Regarding tools: In addition to screwdrivers and cordless drills, a small rubber mallet can also be useful for carefully positioning or loosening the slotted dowels without damaging the wood.

When attaching the new side panels, it is advisable to first insert the screws loosely, then check the alignment before fully tightening them.
