Hello everyone,
I have a small project and need some input: How does retrofitting soft-close mechanisms on Ikea Pax drawers work in practice? My Pax wardrobes currently do not have a soft-close feature, and I want to understand how I can add this without having to buy completely new drawers.
I am especially interested in:
- Which parts are exactly needed?
- How difficult is the installation for someone with average DIY skills?
- Do all Ikea soft-close systems work with Pax drawers, or only specific ones?
- Are there any special considerations regarding adjustment or drawer stability after retrofitting?
I would appreciate detailed experiences or a step-by-step explanation!

I installed the soft-close feature on my Pax drawers myself and I’m really impressed! The soft-close function makes all the difference – no more slamming, everything closes smoothly! The instructions from Ikea are quite clear, but I took my time and followed them step by step. If problems come up, just double-check that the dampers are properly positioned. I really enjoyed doing it – give it a try, it’s definitely worth it!
A structured approach is recommended when retrofitting soft-close mechanisms on Ikea Pax drawers:
- The original Ikea retrofit kit is required, consisting of dampers and, if necessary, compatible hinges.
- Pay attention to compatibility, especially the drilling distances of the drawer type used.
- Remove the drawer and take off any existing mounting parts.
- Attach the soft-close dampers to the designated drill holes.
- Test the function and adjust if needed by sliding the damper.
A common source of problems is incorrect positioning of the dampers, which can cause malfunctions or uneven closing.

The soft-close feature makes all the difference – no more slamming, completely smooth! That’s exactly what makes soft-close systems amazing! You notice it right away, especially with frequently used drawers. And by the way, if you want to make the retrofit more enjoyable, it’s best to do it with an audiobook or podcast playing in the background. Time flies, and the installation almost becomes fun 😉
On the topic: Just measure carefully, and retrofitting will be easy. Don’t worry, the system is quite sturdy and can handle small mistakes during installation.
