Good morning everyone,

I recently chose an IKEA Platsa system and am now in the process of setting everything up. I have an important question: What is the best way to care for IKEA Platsa surfaces to maintain their appearance over time?

Specifically, I’m interested in which materials or cleaning methods are suitable for the surfaces without causing damage. Since Platsa mainly uses melamine-coated particleboard, I wonder if common cleaning products are appropriate or if special treatments like sealants or specific polishes would be advisable.

Does anyone have long-term experience with scratches, stains, or fading of the surfaces? What methods have proven effective for preserving the aesthetic quality over the years?

I look forward to your tips, opinions, and advice, including any warnings about common mistakes to avoid when caring for these surfaces!

Wow, great topic! I also really love my PLATSA furniture and have tried out quite a few things.

Basically, you should clean the surfaces with a well-wrung, slightly damp cloth — not wet, to avoid water stains.

Here I recommend mild soapy water solutions or special furniture cleaning wipes without alcohol or solvents. Even simple dish soap solutions can work very well. Important: Do not use abrasive sponges, as they scratch the surface!

To keep the appearance looking great for longer, I occasionally use a furniture wax or care oil designed for melamine-coated surfaces after cleaning. This adds genuine shine and creates a protective layer. However, it doesn’t last forever—you’ll need to reapply roughly every few months.

You’ve got this—the PLATSA furniture is sturdy, and with proper care it will stay looking good for a long time!

Hello Uspekeo,

I have had good experiences and would like to add some tips.

The melamine-coated surfaces of PLATSA are generally quite durable but sensitive to harsh or abrasive cleaning agents and prolonged moisture. If you want to clean the surfaces, you can proceed as follows:

- Use lukewarm water with a few drops of mild dish soap.
- Wipe with a soft, clean cloth in circular motions.
- Make sure not to work with too much moisture; wiping again with a dry cloth helps protect the surface.

This is very important as scratches become visible quickly! For long-term appearance, I would advise against polishes or oils intended for natural wood. The melamine film often reacts differently and can become blotchy.

Your idea of applying a sealant is interesting, but I am not aware of any product IKEA recommends for this. It is better to avoid direct sunlight since melamine fades over time.

If you still want to apply a protective layer, I recommend products specifically formulated for laminate or melamine films. However, it is best to ask at a specialist retailer to avoid damage.

I hope this helps you – if anything is unclear, please let me know!

Hello Uspekeo and everyone else here,

I find this topic really interesting because I have been thinking a lot about how to keep my PLATSA surfaces looking good for as long as possible, while still not worrying too much in everyday life.

At first, I was also concerned about scratches and stains, especially since I tend to be a bit overenthusiastic and wipe away every single speck of dust immediately.

That advice helped me because otherwise, I would probably damage the surfaces by using overly aggressive cleaning. It’s also important to me not to use harsh chemicals, especially with children in the house.

I usually clean with a slightly damp microfiber cloth and have been lucky that no stains have settled permanently on the surfaces. To prevent damage, I use coasters under drinks and soft pads under heavier items.

It also helps me to remember that these pieces are not made from solid wood – some signs of wear are to be expected and are no big deal.

Does anyone else have tips on how to visually “refresh” or brighten up the furniture despite everyday wear? Have you tried any special care products for this?
