Hello everyone,
I have a problem with my Ikea Malm bed. After some time of use, it started to squeak quite a bit and now feels a bit wobbly—especially the connection points between the frame and the slatted bed base, as well as the drawer runners are giving trouble.
My question is: How can Malm beds be stabilized quickly and easily without having to take the entire frame apart or even replace it completely?
Are there any tips, proven methods, or small tools that effectively improve stability and firmness?
I would also appreciate advice on how to eliminate the squeaking specifically, without spending a lot of time or needing many tools.
Thanks in advance for your tips!

Hello,
for quick stabilization, simply retighten all screws with a suitable screwdriver. If that is not enough, attach a few additional wooden slats under the bed frame using brackets.
Squeaking often comes from loose screws or untreated wood surfaces. Applying a little WD-40 to the metal parts usually helps.

For quick stabilization, simply tighten all screws again with a suitable screwdriver. This is a straightforward tip, but it often isn’t enough for a long-term solution. Especially with Malm-style beds made from particleboard, the threads wear out quickly, causing screws to lose their grip.
A simple and effective method is to insert small wooden pieces or toothpicks coated with wood glue into the screw holes, then reinsert the screws. This increases holding strength without having to disassemble the entire bed.
However, if instability persists, you should check whether any components are damaged or warped; it may also be worth considering adding extra reinforcements.

My tip for squeaking: Sprinkle a little baby powder on the wooden surfaces that rub together – this eliminates noise without using oil, which can attract dust.
Also, occasionally rub a little candle wax on the drawer runners; this helps them slide more smoothly and stops creaking.
This way, the bed brings joy again without much fuss. 🙂

How can you quickly and easily stabilize Malm beds without having to take apart the entire frame or replace it completely? Here are some practical methods for quickly and effectively stabilizing a Malm bed:
1. Check and tighten screws as needed—especially at the connection points between the side panels and the headboard and footboard.
2. If the screw holes have worn threads, filling them with wood shavings or small wooden sticks combined with wood glue, as mentioned earlier, helps improve the fit.
3. For added stability, you can attach small metal corner brackets to the bed sides without altering the frame.
4. Squeaking often comes from friction between wooden surfaces or metal components; simple dry lubricants like silicone spray are recommended but should be applied sparingly.
In short: address the problematic areas systematically, starting with screws, then provide mechanical support, and if needed, apply lubricants carefully to avoid damaging furniture surfaces.
Materials like wood glue, plywood scraps, and screwdrivers are the essential tools.
