Hello everyone, I recently bought an IKEA Hemnes shelving unit to set up in my living room. Unfortunately, I have the problem that the floor there is quite uneven, which causes the shelving unit to be unstable and wobble easily. My question to you is: What is the best way to stabilize IKEA Hemnes shelving units on uneven floors without affecting their appearance or functionality? I would like to know which methods have proven effective, for example, whether special feet or pads should be used, and how to proceed in order to ensure both the safety and longevity of the shelving unit.

First of all, it is important to determine the exact extent of the unevenness: How steep is the slope or gradient of the floor? Small irregularities up to about 3-4 mm (0.1–0.16 inches) can often be compensated for with adjustable furniture glides, although this is not always provided for Hemnes shelving units.

A proven method is to use so-called shims or furniture wedges made of wood, plastic, or rubber. The wedge is placed under the feet so that the shelf stands level. It is important that the wedges are non-slip to avoid any movement.

Alternatively, self-adhesive felt or rubber pads can be carefully attached to the underside of the shelving feet to compensate for small height differences while also protecting the floors.

For more uneven floors, it is worthwhile to secure the shelf to the wall with additional brackets. IKEA usually supplies a wall fixing that prevents tipping—this should definitely be used on unstable surfaces.

A question for you: Is the shelf already fixed to the wall, or is it freestanding? And approximately how much is the difference in floor height at the feet?

Thank you for the detailed reply! The shelf is currently not fixed to the wall, precisely because it is already quite wobbly standing on the floor without being secured. I estimate the unevenness at the feet to be about 6-7 mm (about 0.25 inches), so it’s a bit more than a slight tilt. The floor is an old wooden plank floor, which is slightly uneven in places. Wall mounting is definitely recommended, but I want to first figure out the best way to level the base so the shelf can stand stable even without being fixed to the wall. I’d also appreciate any tips for installing the wall brackets if you have proven methods.

For an unevenness of 6-7 mm (0.24-0.28 inches), I would definitely recommend a combination of leveling the base surface and wall mounting.

- For leveling, I suggest sturdy plastic shims that can be precisely adjusted in height. These can sometimes prevent slipping better than wooden shims.
- Self-adhesive felt or rubber pads are suitable for 1-2 mm (0.04-0.08 inches) height differences; for 6-7 mm (0.24-0.28 inches), they feel too weak and may slip more easily.
- Make sure the shims have full contact with the floor at the base and do not rest like a seesaw on just two points.
- For Hemnes shelves, IKEA offers a sturdy wall bracket that anchors the shelves to the wall.
- Attach the wall brackets to a solid wall, preferably into the masonry or using appropriate anchors to ensure stability.
- Before mounting the brackets, it is advisable to place the shelf on the shims to set the correct height in advance.

This approach not only ensures a secure base but also maintains the shelves’ load-bearing capacity and protects the floor.

If you need more details, I can gladly provide specific product recommendations.

Exactly. Additionally, use adjustable furniture glides if possible, or combine sturdy wooden wedges with wall mounting. This provides optimal stability on uneven floors.
