Hello everyone,

I recently bought a Malm dresser from IKEA and want to secure it safely to my hardwood floor to prevent it from tipping over. Since I currently live in a rental apartment, it’s important to me that no damage is caused to the floor—that means I want to avoid unsightly drill holes or adhesive residue.

Does anyone have experience or tips on how to firmly and safely fix Malm furniture to hardwood flooring without damaging the floor? Are there any special mounting methods or materials you would recommend?

I would appreciate detailed suggestions, including allowed measures in rental situations or alternatives if attaching it to the wall is not an option. Thanks in advance!

Hello gesrdjan,

there are a few reliable methods to securely fasten the MALM dresser to a hardwood floor without causing damage. Generally, IKEA offers wall-anchoring kits for many of their furniture items, including MALM, which is the most secure method as it directly prevents the furniture from tipping over.

When mounting the furniture directly to the wall, the floor itself remains unaffected as long as the screws only go into the wall. If that’s not possible, you can place floor protection mats or non-slip rubber pads under the furniture legs. These prevent slipping and protect the hardwood floor from scratches.

Another option is using furniture corner or edge protectors attached underneath, which provide additional cushioning and protection for the furniture.

If you want to secure the furniture without drilling into the wall or floor, you could also use anti-tip straps that can be fixed to the furniture and wall with double-sided tape. These are often suitable for renters since they can be removed without leaving marks.

I hope this helps you. If you want, I can share links to the respective products 🙂

Hello gesrdjan,

to ensure a really secure attachment of the MALM furniture on parquet flooring, several factors need to be considered:

1. Wall mounting is the best solution from a stability perspective. IKEA usually provides a set with wall plugs, screws, and metal brackets for fixing the furniture to the wall. However, you should first check whether your wall can support this (e.g., concrete, brick, or drywall). For drywall, a special cavity anchor may be necessary.

2. If wall mounting is not possible, you should definitely ensure a secure grip to the floor without damaging it. Elastic anti-slip rubber mats or special furniture feet with soft felt or polyurethane (PU) coatings are suitable for this, as they prevent pressure marks on the parquet.

3. In general, I do not recommend permanent gluing on parquet because some adhesives can leave residues or damage the surface when removed. Also, landlords often do not approve of sticky attachments on the floor.

4. As an alternative, you can fix small wooden strips under the furniture combined with rubber pads to provide good stability. This way, the load is evenly distributed, and the furniture does not slip.

I would like to know: What are the exact dimensions of the MALM furniture (width, depth, height), and how heavily is your parquet expected to be used? Is there a wall where the furniture stands or could stand? Depending on the situation, there may be other options we can discuss.

Hey gesrdjan!

It’s great that you’re putting so much thought into this before anything gets damaged! 🙂 I secured my MALM dresser to the wall using those anti-tip straps from IKEA. You basically only need to drill holes in the wall, but no holes in the floor. These straps are really practical because they don’t leave marks on the floor, and even if you move later, everything can be removed quickly without any residue.

Exactly! If drilling into the wall isn’t an option for you, maybe you can still convince your landlord? Usually it’s not a problem if you discuss it beforehand.

As a little extra tip: My wife and I put felt pads under the furniture to protect the floor when we move things around. They work really well and even look good.

Good luck! You’ve got this! 🙂

gesrdjan,

from a purely technical and safety perspective: The best and only truly recommended solution for MALM dressers, which are considered top-heavy due to their height and narrow width, is definitely wall anchoring according to the manufacturer’s instructions from IKEA. This anchoring primarily serves child safety and prevents accidents.

Attaching directly to the hardwood floor is problematic for several reasons: First, screwing or even gluing straps can permanently damage or discolor the hardwood flooring. Second, purely floor-based solutions usually do not provide enough stability against tipping.

I recommend:

- Checking the existing wall (material, load-bearing capacity)
- Using the original IKEA mounting kits
- If drilling is prohibited, definitely clarify alternative options with the landlord
- Avoiding adhesive fastenings on the hardwood floor as they can cause significant damage.

If direct wall anchoring is not possible,
I would at least place felt pads under the furniture legs to minimize sliding, and additionally use passive protection (e.g., anti-tip straps with adhesive pads on the wall, if approved).

Please note that 100% safety is hardly achievable without wall anchoring.

If you provide more details about your wall type or specific situation, I can offer more precise recommendations.
