Hello everyone, I’m facing the following issue: I want to assemble an Ikea Pax wardrobe and securely attach it to a drywall (gypsum board) wall. Since the wall is not solid, I’m wondering which fixing methods are truly suitable to safely support the weight of the wardrobe and the potential pulling forces from opening the doors over the long term. Are there any special anchors or mounting techniques you would recommend? Also, any tips on how to proceed if the wardrobe feet should not only rest on the floor but also be secured to the wall? I appreciate well-founded advice based on experience or reliable installation recommendations.

Alternatively, heavy-duty anchors for hollow cavities can help Do you mean special toggle anchors that open inside the cavity? If so, are they also suitable for thin drywall panels (about 12.5 cm (5 inches)) without risking significant damage to the panel during installation? Or would it be better to reinforce the panel at specific points? Or both? My concern is also that the cabinet doesn’t pull away from the mounting points later on.

Or is it better to reinforce the panel at specific points? Or both? Exactly, both. First reinforce the wall, for example with wooden battens behind the drywall, then use heavy-duty anchors designed for hollow walls. Otherwise, the wall around the anchors will tear out.
There are also special mounting options with strong metal profiles that can be attached in front of the wall. When installing, always secure the cabinet to the wall, even if it seems quite stable on its own. Better safe than sorry. If it gets a bit more complicated, just ask someone with construction site experience – the risk otherwise is unnecessarily high.

One more question about the installation height: The Ikea Pax wardrobe has mounting screws at the top of the side panels to secure it to the wall. Is it sufficient to fix it only at the top and simply let the wardrobe rest on the baseboard at the bottom? Or should additional fastenings be installed at different heights to improve stability? And in general, how many wall anchors should be used per side on drywall to ensure the wardrobe does not tip or pull the anchors out when the doors are opened?

Or should additional fastenings be installed higher up to increase stability? Definitely install more than just one fastening! Ideally, secure it at the top and in the middle. If you only fasten it at the top, the cabinet can tilt at the bottom or cause unwanted movement when opening the doors.
I recommend at least three anchors per side – at the top, middle, and if possible, lower down. This way, you distribute the load evenly on the wall and reduce stress on individual anchors. And remember: it’s better to invest a little more and tighten securely than to fix problems later! 😊
