Hello everyone,

I plan to secure several Ikea Billy bookcases in my apartment on tiled floors. Since these bookcases are quite tall, I want to ensure they stand firmly and are tip-resistant without damaging the tiles or using inappropriate anchors that could compromise stability.

I am especially interested in:
- The best fastening methods when the bookcase is placed directly on a tiled floor
- How to safely attach the bookcases to the wall without damaging the tiles
- Recommendations for suitable anchors or screws that can be fixed through tiles and into, for example, masonry or drywall
- Any special tips or tools that can make the job easier, especially since tiles are fragile

I appreciate any advice, as I want to be sure that the Billy bookcase won’t tip over eventually or cause damage to the wall or floor. How do you usually handle this?

Thank you!

Hello LIMEDA,

regarding your question about securely fixing Billy shelves on tiled floors: Generally, I advise against anchoring the shelf solely to the tiled floor, as tiles are not a suitable substrate for anchors or screws due to their lack of load-bearing capacity.

The most important point is to anchor the shelf to the wall to prevent tipping. If your wall is masonry, it is best to use universal anchors (e.g., nylon anchors) of the appropriate size. Before drilling, make sure to drill through the tiles only with a rotary hammer to avoid cracking the tiles.

To protect the floor tiles, you can attach small rubber pads or felt gliders under the shelf feet – this prevents scratches and provides some stability. To reduce risk, be sure to choose multiple fixing points on the back panel. For drywall, I recommend using specialized cavity anchors.

Additional tips:
- Use a hammer drill with a tile drill bit
- Drill slowly and with light pressure through the tile
- Check the wall structure behind the tiles beforehand

With this approach, you should achieve a solid and secure fixing.

I completely agree! I often feel concerned when I see furniture just placed loosely on tiled floors – that can be really dangerous.

I once used a Billy bookcase myself and made sure to fix it to the wall. If you're unsure, take a look at the mounting kits from Ikea – they are usually practical and easy to install.

Also, I imagine you might be advised to use childproof brackets if there are children in the household. These prevent the shelf from accidentally tipping over.

How tall are the shelves exactly, and what kind of wall do you have? If you want, please share more about the wall surface, so we can give you more targeted recommendations.

Hello everyone,

Here is a brief step-by-step tutorial on how to securely install Billy shelves on tiled floors, including wall mounting:

1. Preparation: Measure the spot where the shelf will be placed. Check the wall to see if it is masonry or drywall.

2. Plan drilling points: Mark the drill holes for the wall brackets on the back of the shelf and transfer these marks onto the wall. First, carefully drill through the tiles using a tile drill bit.

3. Choose anchors: For masonry, nylon anchors (6-8 mm (0.24-0.31 inches)) are suitable. For drywall cavities, special hollow wall anchors (e.g., metal anchors) are recommended.

4. Wall mounting: Attach the shelf brackets horizontally to the wall using appropriate screws and anchors. For added safety, use at least two mounting points per shelf.

5. Floor protection: Use felt pads or non-slip pads under the shelf feet to protect the tiles and prevent slipping.

6. Check: Test whether the shelf is stable and does not wobble.

Common mistakes include drilling too large holes in the tiles (which can cause cracks) or using too few mounting points. Also, unsuitable anchors can lead to long-term instability.

I hope this helps you.

I can only agree, that’s really half the battle – lack of planning is often the reason for many problems.

A quick tip: The original Ikea fasteners are usually great, but I specifically got angle screws that are a bit more robust – highly recommended for my Billy shelves on tiles.

And one more thing: If you’re not experienced with drilling into tiles, try it first in an inconspicuous spot or use a tile drill bit with a depth stopper that sets the exact drilling depth. It will save you a lot of frustration (and broken tiles).

So definitely, you can make the shelf very stable if you take a bit of care :-) Good luck!
