Hello,
I certainly don’t want to advertise here; I just need some information to answer the question: How does the average homebuilder choose a roof?

I built the website for the company SolteQ, which manufactures solar roof shingles. The owner naturally wants to promote his site and products as effectively as possible, but apparently isn’t making much progress. Selling the products is extremely difficult, even though solar technology is a popular topic. The sales channel through roofing contractors doesn’t seem to be working.

Now he believes that roofs should somehow be sold directly over the internet. In my opinion, no one buys a roof directly through some kind of online shop; it only works with consultation – but that is just speculation. I have never built a house myself and find it difficult to put myself in that position.

I really hope this is not seen as blatant advertising. It’s a question I have been thinking about for several days.

Regards
Frank

Homeowners build with general contractors or architects. Or with simple local construction companies.
What they are not familiar with will not be suggested by them.
The target audience of an advertisement is therefore mostly not the end consumer, but the companies.

OK, thanks, that’s at least a starting point.
I’ve sent the company owner a link to this thread. I’m quite new to this topic myself. Maybe he will add something as well. I’ve already explained to him the rule about “no advertising here.”

The typical homebuilder usually starts with a clear visual idea of the style of their house. Keywords might be "Bauhaus," "Tuscan," "urban villa," and so on. If they want a pitched roof, questions such as color matching between roof tiles and window frames become very important—as well as whether the building permit or planning permission allows their preferences. Whether to choose clay or concrete roof tiles is a secondary consideration; the homebuilder focuses primarily on the appearance, and knowledge about materials tends to develop more slowly.

In the field of solar energy or photovoltaics, homebuilders generally have little personal input. Considerations in this area are mainly driven by the mix of energy generation measures required to achieve a desired KfW standard. Usually, they accept whatever the specialist recommends. In this respect, I don’t see the end customer as the main target for marketing specific products—not even indirectly (meaning they wouldn’t typically ask the specialist to use a particular brand, for example).

Oops – I just received an urgent call from the company owner: I completely misunderstood the issue with online sales. There is, of course, going to be no online store. It was very important to him that I clarify this correctly here!

Whether UPS or DHL, selling roof shingles through an online store would certainly be "fun": dozens of packages weighing 31.5 kg (69 lbs) each, left with neighbors, then returned broken because the color wasn’t liked *LOL*

But seriously: sending special sample pieces – for example, one in each of four colors – together with the dealer directory in a padded wine bottle box or something similar might not be a bad idea after all.
