Hello everyone, I have a general question about IKEA Kallax: How do you connect your Kallax shelves with other IKEA furniture, such as Hemnes dressers or Besta cabinets? I’m especially interested in which screws you use, whether special fittings are necessary, and how you ensure a stable connection without the furniture wobbling or getting damaged. The goal is to modularly and securely screw Kallax to other series, ideally so that everything can be separated again if needed. I look forward to your tips and experiences!

It’s almost like building furniture in your own mini workshop. 🙂 For extra stability, you can also try using double-sided mounting tape—not as the sole connection, but as a supplement. And hey, if you don’t want to damage the finished sides, make sure to drill the holes nicely centered! Good luck—and look forward to the result, it will definitely look great!

Avoid fastening screws only through the thin back panels This is an important point that is often overlooked. I wonder how you handle the material properties of Kallax. It is usually made of particleboard or MDF, which can tear out relatively quickly under tension. Your suggestions about spacer sleeves are helpful, but does anyone use special dowels or connectors designed specifically for these types of panels? I ask because, in my opinion, fastening from the side without proper reinforcement causes stress in the material and can compromise stability in the long run.

Does anyone here use special dowels or connectors designed for these types of panels?Yes, to prevent issues, I often use so-called "Minifix" fittings from IKEA or similar manufacturers. These significantly reinforce the assembly. If that’s not possible, I use wood connectors with metal sleeves that are screwed into the panels to strengthen the screw holding. The pre-drilling depth should be exact to ensure the sleeve fits securely. This usually works well for Kallax units, but be careful with the back panel, as it is simply too thin.
I also agree with the recommendation not to connect via the back panel. Instead, cut spacer pieces from 15mm (0.6 inch) plywood or MDF and use these as the connection point between the Kallax and Hemnes units. This way, the load is better distributed. Pre-drill and use metal screws, 3.5x30 mm (1/8x1 1/4 inch) are suitable, preferably galvanized or with a countersunk head.
Thank you for the detailed tips! Now that I have received quite a few suggestions, I wanted to ask more specifically: If I use a thin wooden board as a connecting element – for example, a 15mm (0.6 inch) thick MDF piece that I screw into the Kallax and Hemnes units – is it sufficient to use two screws per side? Or should I use more? Would reinforcing it with angle brackets be a good idea, or would that be overkill?
