Hello everyone,
I would like to know the proper way to replace the drawer slides on IKEA Malm dressers. After several years of use, the slides on my dresser have worn out, causing the drawers to not run smoothly and sometimes stick.
I am particularly interested in the steps required to remove the old slides, whether any special tools are needed, and if replacement parts can be ordered directly from IKEA or if it is better to use third-party suppliers. It would also be helpful to know if the replacement is doable for beginners or if some prior DIY experience is recommended.
I am using the Malm model with four drawers, in case that is relevant.
Thanks in advance for your advice!

whether the replacement is doable for laypersons or if some prior DIY experience is advisableThe replacement does not require any special DIY skills. Patience and careful handling are important, especially when removing the plastic clips.
Spare parts can now be easily found through various online stores if IKEA no longer offers them.
Simply remove the old rails, take the measurements, and then purchase matching rails.
Supplementing the thread with technical details:
Malm drawer runners are usually 35 cm (14 inches) long and feature a combination of plastic rollers and metal guides on the rails.
When removing them, note the following:
- The drawer must be fully pulled out.
- The clips are designed so that you usually have to press them upward before the rail can be removed.
- The screws securing the rails are sometimes hidden, so careful inspection is necessary.
For installation:
The new rails must be precisely aligned with the original mounting holes. Any misalignment can cause the drawer to stick or not close properly.
The best replacement rails are either originally compatible or so-called universal furniture runners, which often have slight dimensional differences.
In conclusion: A successful replacement requires careful disassembly and precise work during installation.
