Hello everyone, I want to replace the drawer handles on my IKEA Hemnes bedroom furniture because I no longer like the current ones. My question is: What is the exact procedure for doing this? What tools do I need, and are there any special considerations for the Hemnes series, for example regarding how the handles are attached? I assume the drawers need to be removed first and then the screws loosened from the inside, but I’m unsure about the details. Does anyone have experience and can provide a step-by-step guide? Thanks in advance!

That’s usually how it goes. I’m happy to help you with a short guide.

- Carefully pull out the drawers and remove them completely. They are usually mounted on sliding rails; sometimes they can be released by gently pressing or lifting.
- Turn the drawer upside down to see the screws holding the handles.
- Use a Phillips screwdriver to unscrew the screws.
- Remove the old handle, attach the new one, and screw it back in.

Important: Make sure the new handles have the same screw spacing, otherwise they won’t fit properly. Some Hemnes handles have 96 mm (3.8 inches) or 128 mm (5 inches) hole spacing. A tape measure will help here.

Also, when reinserting the drawer, check that the sliding rails are not misaligned, otherwise the drawer may stick.

If you want to use special handles (different thickness or material), you might need longer screws – these are usually included or available at hardware stores.

Remove the drawers, loosen the screws, change the handle, then reassemble everything in reverse order. Usually, only a Phillips screwdriver is needed. It’s not complicated.

Very useful tip! If you have the wrong measurements, the handle becomes a puzzle piece that just won’t fit. 😄

I experienced this myself and almost lost my mind until I took out the tape measure.

One more little trick: If you like to change handles frequently, write down the measurements on a note and keep the matching screws. That way, you’ll have everything ready next time and avoid any unwanted tinkering. Good luck!

As mentioned before, you usually only need a Phillips screwdriver. The handles are attached to the drawer from the inside. There are no special considerations since the Hemnes has standardized holes for the handles.

Pull out the drawer, turn it over, remove the screws, attach the new handle, put the drawer back in – done.
