Hello everyone,
I have been experiencing issues with my IKEA Malm drawers for some time now. Specifically, some drawers no longer slide in and out smoothly; they sometimes stick or even jam. Additionally, on two drawers, the side runners are slightly bent or have come loose from their mounts. My question to the community is: What is the best way to repair Malm drawers when the runners no longer operate smoothly, the guides are sticking, and certain parts may need to be replaced? Is special tooling required, and are original replacement parts from IKEA recommended, or are there universal compatible alternatives available?
For efficient answers, it would be great if you could cover common causes, a step-by-step repair guide, or common pitfalls to avoid during the repair. Thanks!

Hi everyone,
a quick reminder: After the repair, don’t forget to open and close the drawer fully several times to identify any sticking points and adjust them if needed. Also, a bit of patience goes a long way—often, slight adjustments are required until the movement runs smoothly.
It’s also a good idea to carefully listen for any noises when operating the drawer. If something is sticking, you can usually hear it if you pay close attention.
Looking forward to Colbytan getting their Malm drawers working smoothly again! 🙂

I really appreciate how many helpful tips are shared here. 🙂
Colbytan, I completely understand how frustrating a sticking drawer can be. If the drawer slides are quite old, sometimes it helps to take a bit of emotional distance: repairing is fine, but also consider small upgrades.
I’m not saying you should replace everything immediately, but experience shows that with frequently used furniture, buying new can sometimes be the better option in the long run. There is often some frustration involved with these kinds of issues, and that shouldn’t be underestimated.
If you decide to repair, definitely follow a step-by-step approach, as described here!
