Hello everyone,

I have an issue with adhesive residues on the surfaces of my Kallax shelf. More specifically, it’s the typical, rather durable adhesive film that I removed, but not completely. The residues feel sticky and slightly tacky, and I want to avoid damaging the surface, as it’s not particularly sturdy.

My question is: What proven methods or home remedies do you use to reliably and gently remove adhesive residues from the sensitive Kallax panels?

I’m especially interested in tips that aren’t too aggressive and don’t harm the plastic or the finish. Do you use special solvents, or are there mechanical techniques that work well? I’d appreciate any experiences and recommendations!

Thanks in advance.

Hello Ledenis30,

Dealing with adhesive residue on Kallax furniture can indeed be challenging, especially since the material can scratch or discolor easily. Here is a step-by-step guide that usually helps to resolve this issue.

1. Preparation: First, test your chosen cleaning method on an inconspicuous area to see how the surface reacts.

2. Gentle mechanical removal: Use a plastic spatula or an old credit card to carefully lift off the adhesive residue. Avoid metal tools as they can damage the surface.

3. Oil treatment: Apply a few drops of cooking oil or baby oil to a cloth and rub it into the adhesive. The oil helps to soften the sticky substance. After 10-15 minutes, you can try lifting the residue again gently.

4. Alcohol or nail polish remover: If the oil is not enough, you can carefully use isopropyl alcohol (at least 70%) or acetone-free nail polish remover. Use only a small amount and wipe off quickly, as prolonged exposure can cause damage.

5. Cleaning afterward: Clean the surface with mild dish soap and warm water to remove any oil or alcohol residue.

Common mistakes include scratching too hard or using harsh solvents like pure acetone, which can harm the surface. Applying heat may help but is usually risky for Kallax plastic.

I hope this helps! Feel free to share how it went if you like.

Great tip! I recently had the same problem, and this really helped me out :-)

In addition, I used some warm water with dish soap to soften the adhesive before carefully using the plastic spatula.

And to be honest: a bit of patience is key! Adhesive residue won’t disappear overnight, but with methods like these, it’s definitely manageable. So keep at it! 🙂

Here’s my secret tip – and yes, it works every time for me:

Very simple: peanut butter! Sounds crazy, but because of the oils, it’s really good at loosening adhesive residues. Apply the peanut butter generously to the residue, let it sit for about 10 to 20 minutes, then simply wipe off with a soft cloth.

It works for me without causing any damage and without any unpleasant smell (except for a butter scent 🙂). Afterwards, clean everything with soapy water to remove any oily traces.

Give it a try, it’s really fun 🙂
